Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
Megan and Jill have been helping out in the kitchen since they were three and they really know how to demystify recipes for the novice cook. This step-by-step guide provides wonderful detailed recipes that teens will be tempted to create on their own. Each recipe includes a personal anecdote that will inspire the reader to read this book as a story. Megan and Jill compiled family recipes as well as others they created just for this book. Kitchen shortcut tips, vocabulary sidebars, and numerous color illustrations provide additional information that enables even the novice baker to be successful. The recipes include Triple Chocolate Biscotti, Peach Clafouti, Peppermint Ice Cream Sandwiches, Chocolate Eclairs, Fresh Berry Pie, Banana Spring Rolls with Cinnamon-Caramel Sauce, and many more mouthwatering treats. This book is a sequel to Teens Cook: How to Cook What You Want to Eat. Jill and Megan are the daughters of Judi Carle, who has collaborated on more than 20 cookbooks and who has obviously inspired her daughters. This is a great book for beginning cooks. KLIATT Codes: JS—Recommended for junior and senior high school students. 2006, Ten Speed Press, 157p. illus. index., Ages 12 to 18.

VOYA
What better way to teach teenagers how to cook than by starting with desserts? Megan and Jill Carle, the authors of Teens Cook (Ten Speed Press, 2004/VOYA December 2004), create another delightful compilation of recipes for teens to try out. They start out with the all-around favorites, like classic chocolate chip cookies. There are holiday recipes for Halloween dirt pie, complete with cookie tombstones and gummy worms that seem to crawl out of the chocolate "earth." The final chapter has fancy foods like vanilla soufflT with chocolate sauce or fresh raspberry napoleons. (Are you hungry yet?) Not only do the recipes sound delicious, they look delicious in glossy color pictures. This book is a beauty just to look through, but it will make one's sugar-craving levels rise. The instructions are easy to understand, but often crammed into one or two large paragraphs. Beginning cooks will need some guidance when it comes to the terminology and techniques used. For a teen who already knows a little about the kitchen, this book will be a delight. There are tons of handy sidebars filled with helpful cooking advice or neat historical facts. This book is a must for any library with teens who have the slightest interest in making their own sweets. VOYA CODES: 4Q 3P M J S (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses; Will appeal with pushing; Middle School, defined as grades 6 to 8; Junior High, defined as grades 7 to 9; Senior High, defined as grades 10 to 12). 2006, Ten Speed Press, 176p.; Index. Illus. Photos., Ages 11 to 18.

    I love this cookbook!

I bought this cook book for my 14 yr old daughter a couple of weeks ago, who doesn't have a lot of experience in the kitchen. She has made a few desserts from this book and they turned out great! She loves to cook now. The pictures and directions are very helpful, and fun to look at. It is a very well put together cookbook with great recipes. I like it so much I'm going to buy her the 'Teens Cook' 1st cook book.
