Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy McLaughlin
Developed in association with the Gallup Organization, this is a textbook looking into the issues surrounding LGBT individuals. Topics covered include the process of coming out, defining one’s sexual identity, and the harassment and struggles faced by LGBT teens. They also look into society’s views on homosexuality and discuss how those views have shifted over time. The book uses graphs to add visual representation of data collected by the Gallup Organization. Included in the book is a table of contents, glossary, and index, making it simple to find relevant information. The book also contains a list of Internet resources and further reading suggestions for students to continue their research into this topic. This book would be ideal for middle or high school students doing research on LGBT issues. It is a broad overview and would make a good initial reference guide. The language and subject matter is appropriate for the target audience. The book’s struggle is its inability to maintain a level of accuracy given the quickly evolving nature of the topic. Even though it was only published in 2014, some information is already out of date and the polls reported have changed, sometimes drastically. Teachers might recommend it to interested students with the additional suggestion that they continue research online and check for more updated information from another source. Reviewer: Amy McLaughlin; Ages 11 to 13.
