Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Wouldn't you like to have a pet that can fit in the palm of your hand or at least small enough that it wouldn't take up a lot of space or eat huge amounts of food? Chihuahuas are small, but the one featured here is really tiny—only two pounds of dog. She is outweighed by a pound by Mr. Peebles, a very small cat. A new one for this reviewer is the teacup pig which is about 12 inches high and apparently they are very intelligent. Mouse lemurs and pygmy marmoset monkeys are also very tiny—the latter is about 6 inches long and "weighs about as much as a cupcake." There are frogs, horses, tarsiers, chameleons, hummingbirds, armadillos, seahorses, snakes and rabbits that all come in pint sizes. These little critters will fascinate little kids and parents had better watch out or there may some requests for a pet or two. Fortunately, many of these creatures live in the wild. Every spread has easy to read text and full color photographs of the animals featured. A Level 2 book in the "Scholastic Reader" series that is appropriate for developing readers. This book is targeted to grades 1-2, has a lexile of 680 and a word count of 614. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
