Overview

Georg Philipp Telemann was considerably more popular during his lifetime than his equally prolific colleague Johann Sebastian Bach. In fact, Bach was hired for the coveted position of Kantor in Leipzig only because Telemann had already turned down the offer. Listening to this delightful program, it's easy to understand why Telemann's music was so beloved. While he was a brilliant musical craftsman, his work is less intricate and more overtly melodic than Bach's. The Suite in A minor for recorder and strings is a perfect example of Telemann's tuneful talents. The eight compact movements are packed with memorable melodies tossed back and forth between the warm, woody strings and the sweet chirping of the solo recorder. At budget price, these warm and warmly recorded performances from the excellent Bratislavian chamber orchestra Capella Istropolitana make a most appealing introduction to one of the great masters of the baroque.
