American Journal of Nursing (AJN) Book of the Year Award 2009 in the category of Maternal and Child Health

This telephone triage book is designed for use by professional nurses assessing and advising patients over the telephone on topics related to obstetric and gynecology. It is designed to crystallize the professional's existing knowledge base and to provide clear guidance on handling a wide variety of patient situations which the triage nurse might need to work through.

The introductory section outlines the key medical/legal, counseling, and practical aspects of telephone triage and includes a new chapter on the use of online information retrieval. Subsequent sections present specific protocols for selected obstetric, gynecologic, and women's health problems. New and expanded protocols in this edition include updated infertility management and medications, additional contraceptive methods such as NuvaRing and Implanon, current abnormal Pap smear management, hormone therapy advice, and emergency contraception options.

This easy-to-use manual provides telephone triage protocols to nurses involved with obstetrics and gynecology. It offers suggestions for asking appropriate questions in a flowchart format to ascertain the assessment and severity of the problem and need for medical intervention. This guide serves as a decision-making tool for the nurse to easily identify and prioritize who needs immediate medical attention, who needs to be seen within twenty-four hours, and who can be monitored at home. Includes topics that cover basics, protocols, symptoms and issues that occur within the scope of this specialty. The forms in the guide may be duplicated and used as patient handouts.

Reviewer: Robin Webb Corbett, PhD, RN C(East Carolina University)
Description: Changes in women's healthcare since the publication in 2003 of the first edition mandated the update of this book for healthcare professionals who provide telephone counseling to obstetrical and gynecological patients.
Purpose: Most women's healthcare practices have an identified healthcare professional who returns patient calls. This book concisely and succinctly addresses the most common patient calls.
Audience: This book is written for healthcare personnel who advise obstetrical and gynecological patients via telephone. It is not appropriate for healthcare students, as the protocol format must be combined with experience for appropriate assessment and actions. The authors, both nurses, one a nurse-midwife and the other an attorney, are both credible authorities.
Features: The obstetrical content is divided by trimester and the gynecological content is ordered alphabetically (i.e., "abnormal bleeding and spotting," "pelvic complaints"). Organizing the material by protocol format facilitates use by busy professionals. Content is arranged by patient assessment, followed by actions and patient education. The information is to be individualized by healthcare practice and based on patient need.
Assessment: Telephone triage is an expanding area in healthcare, specifically for obstetric and gynecologic patients. This updated book in protocol format will provide information for healthcare personnel of varying educational backgrounds to assess, advise, and document quickly and accurately the many telephone questions received by women's healthcare practices.
