Overview

Through the characters and their intertwined stories, this novel offers a glimpse into a crucial period of contemporary history that marked the end of an era. The Cuban economy of the 1950s is dictated by the United States, and Cuba's dominant class, made up of American executives and their families living in the Oriente province, leads an almost colonial lifestyle. Everly Lederer and K.C. Stites are two children who have been raised in this small paradise and who can't even begin to suspect the rest of the island's reality. In the mountains, a group led by Fidel Castro begins to organize itself and start the revolution that will conclude with the fall of dictator Batista and the expulsion of Americans from Cuba. In Havana, the French arms dealer La Mazière flirts with a cabaret dancer who will facilitate his access to Cuba's rich and powerful. This novel is full of sharp observations on human nature and colonialist bias, which provide a deep understanding of the revolution’s causes.
