Meet the Author

Dr. William Backus is founder of the Center for Christian Psychological Services, and an ordained clergyman in the Lutheran church. He is also a licensed Consulting Psychologist. He has a master's degree in theology from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Backus has conducted follow-up studies of his clients, which show a 95 percent improvement rate, compared to a 67 percent success rate for other methods of therapy. The difference, Dr. Backus says, is "the truth of God as revealed in the Word."

In addition, he serves as an assistant pastor on the staff of North Heights Lutheran Church, Roseville, Minnesota, where he has founded and directed a lay-staffed free counseling clinic. He and his wife live in Minnesota.

Understanding why you do what you do

This book was extremely helpful during and after a painful divorce. It was more helpful because I am a Christian, but anyone that feels like their life is out of control can gain so much from this book. The sections let you see the impact of emotions on how and why we do and say the things we do. Perhaps you don't feel that you can change the way you are, but the authors give alternatives that can be practiced to start you on the way to a new personality.

Wonderful help in overcoming anxiety and depression!

Telling Yourself the Truth helped me to have a better understanding of the ways that I was lying to myself and how to replace the lies with truth based on the Word of God. It is especially effective when used along with another book by Backus entitled, Learning to Tell Myself the Truth. This workbook-style book really helped me to put the message into action. I was able to greatly reduce my anxiety about flying with very little effort with the help of these books. My husband has benefitted from these books as well. We were introduced to them through Dr. Neil Nedley's Depression Recovery Program and we now recommend them to help others in the process of overcoming depression and anxiety.

    A MUST READ

This book changed my life when I read it almost twenty years ago, and I still apply its principles today. I hope it going to be available in Nook, as I keep giving away my copy.
