    Understanding tantrums

Dobson's book advocates a punitive approach to toddler tantrums. The author seems to misunderstand two facts about toddler behavior: 1)that tantrums during this period are most often a response to fear of separation, and 2)that disagreement and 'negativism' during the toddler period offer opportunities to practice the arts of negotiation and compromise that are essential in child and adult social interactions. Punishing early tantrums is easy and often gratifying to the parent, but fails to consider the role of this behavior in the child's development. For the great majority of children, improved language skills and more advanced models of social relations will bring about an increase in 'mature' behavior during the preschool years.

    More Unsuccessful 'Loving'

This book is yet another attempt to equate violence with caring and love.It still amazes me that loving to many people means hurting until control and submission take place. Too bad Barnes and Noble does not have a zereo (or less) rating.

    Sociopath on the Loose...

This is possibly one of the best how-to books on raising sociopathic children that I have ever read! However, I highly discourage the use of this book by people who are serious about raising happy, well-adjusted children.

    What Happened to God's Grace?

On p.14, Dobson describes brutally whipping his 12-pound dog into submission, with a belt. ¿That tiny dog and I had the most vicious fight ever staged between man and beast.¿ And then on p.15 Dobson compares the dog to children: ¿Just as surely as a dog will occasionally challenge the authority of his leaders, so will a little child¿only more so.¿ (emphasis Dobson¿s). It is entirely remarkabley that anyone would hit a dog or a child, but by comparing the child to the dog, Dobson really shows his true feelings about God's gifts to us. On p.16, Dobson writes ¿Why can¿t parents resolve all conflicts by the use of quiet discussions and explanations and gentle pats on the head? The answer is found in the curious value system of children that respects strength and courage (when ombined with love). What better explanation can be given for the popularity of the mythical Superman and Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman in the folklore of children? Why else do children proclaim, `My dad can beat up your dad!¿? (One child replied to that statement, `That¿s nothing. My mom can beat up my dad, too!¿) A HIERARCHY OF STRENGTH You see, boys and girls care about the issue of who¿s toughest.¿ ¿ All of these ideas come from adults - not children. The children who are parented gracefully by loving, caring, parents don't speak this way. It is the children who are taught, buy their parents abusive behavior, to see violence as a means to 'solve' problems who will talk of fathers and mother's 'beating up each other.' The data of the psychological effects of abusive methods of discipline such as those found in all of Dobson's books is in. Why these books are still permitted on the shelves is beyond me. Please consider 'Jesus on Parenting,' by Teresa Whitehurst instead.

If they get angry, beat them into submission.

What can be said about an approach toward child-rearing designed to break the will and spirit of children? The right-wing christian philosophy obviously places a higher priority on beating the devil out of our inherently evil children than it does their healthy emotional growth and development.
