Kudos to Ms. Hook. This book is an exciting, fun ride. I'll admit that at first I was skeptical - the first few pages felt like a young adult novel, which is not my style. But I immediately got sucked in, and I felt driven to continue reading. By the climax of the story I felt a kind of emotional connection to the main characters. There were times when I wanted to grab Janelle and ask "What were you thinking?" And the character of Andrina would get me so angry - only good writing can elicit that kind of reaction. I think the best part of this book is the pace. There were times when I found myself reading much later than I should have. But I needed to find out what happened next. Because of the pace, the characters, and the potential for some pretty spiffy special effects, in my mind I could see this story becoming a motion picture. Pick up this book. Sit back. Enjoy the (wild) ride.

this book, while possibly worth the 99 cents it cost, was hardly worth the attention necessary to read it. all the adjectives used were also abused, and the ending read like a manual on 'why hurricanes aren't as awful as you think.' the person who compared this to 'the lightning thief' was slightly out of it. please, if you want to waste your money on a good idea gone boring, go ahead-but dont waste your time.

Janelle, a normal teenager who has just made a move from Michigan to Florida with her dad, realizes something's not quite right the day her dad wants to stay in the path of the hurricane to watch its power instead of flee to safety. With the help of a police escort and a mandatory evacuation, they make it to safety just in time ... just in time, that is, to see a boy come out of the eye of the hurricane. Janelle's initial shock and confusion turn to anger and fear as she realizes there is more, much more, that she hasn't been told about her life. Now Janelle must come to terms with who- and what- she is, and figure out how to fulfill her destiny on her own terms. Engaging throughout and geared towards a young adult readership, this book is the first in the Destroyer series by Holly Hook. The storyline and pacing of the book are reminiscent of Rick Riordan's Olympians series with Percy Jackson, but with a unique concept that is ultimately satisfying in much the same way. From the initial scene with the hurricane bearing down on Janelle and her dad, this story pulls you right along through to the surprising conclusion. Creative and entertaining, this book is good fun from start to finish. The writing style is simplistic, using language and phrasing that will appeal to younger audiences. If this were a book targeting adults, my rating would reflect this simplistic writing style. Instead, I chose to rate this with regards to the intended audience. The lack of sophistication expected for an adult tale is completely appropriate in this story meant for younger audiences, and the book will likely appeal to a much wider audience. I hope the next book in the series will develop the characters a bit more to add a little more depth and authenticity to their personalities and relationships. @ MotherLode blog

This book was okay in terms of story line but it was not written well. The same exact descriptive terms were used again and again and it read like something written by a middle school student. Not worth it. Weak lead character, she doesn't take charge of anything until the last minute and really was just pathetic.

The line for this story was a good idea but it wasn't executed well at all. I mean, the characters are really flat. I actually liked the antagonist because she was the only character that really stood out. The main character, Janelle, just whines and whines and WHINES. Like please, shut up you're 16 not 5. That's how the WHOLE book is minus the last 20 pages. So she freaks out the whole time, has horrible "luck" though really she's just kind of an idiot, and then she finally does what she's been freaking out about and, oh look, it ain't so bad. Like a dang 5 year old. Supposedly there's a romance between her and a guy but he just holds her hand a couple times, which really doesn't mean anything. Like I said, really flat.
Do not recommend. At all. Ever. Don't read it.

It is somewhat YA which I always enjoy but it is about not being afraid fo things that you cannot control. If it is something that has to be done. you can do it!
Thanks Holly for making this a great read and helping my self esteem even!

Hurricanes. Since Katrina, everyone older than 7 knows what a hurricane is and what they do. They think. Actually, according to the Natural Law, Katrina was a girl who was born a Tempest. All Tempests names come up once in their life and that is their turn to destroy and kill or, if they’re kind-hearted to try not to.
Janelle and her dad had just moved to Florida from Michigan. Mom had passed away years ago and Dad had a new job. Janelle was amazed by the power and force of Hurricane Gary – the first one she’d been
in. She was scared to death and, when she went out in the street to view the damage, she met a stranger her age. Named Gary. Things didn’t click just then but they did soon after!
Janelle learns that dad had ulterior motives in hauling her to Florida. Everyone seems to have them in this book. She also learns that the little spiral birthmark she has is shared by many beings and that her grandmother’s name is Camille. (Remember her????)
This story really caught my attention. Janelle and Gary make it a Y/A novel but other things keep adults interested as well. Since this is a “part 1” kinda of book I’m hoping Holly will let me read parts 2+.

Tempest is the story of Janelle, a teenage girl who discovers she is in fact, a hurricane. Janelle was a difficult character to like. I understand that she was frightened by her situation, but to me, she came off as incredibly selfish. If she would have just taken in all the facts and made a decision based on them, she could have avoided the majority of her problems. I just felt like it took her too long to just accept her life for what it is. Instead she runs around for more than half the book, avoiding the help that people are giving her.
I did enjoy the fact that the romance between Janelle and Gary was slow moving. They certainly have a connection, but at this point, that's all it really is. The two hurricanes did not have time for a romance - they were much more concerned with saving themselves and the world. I feel like if the relationship were more developed, it would have felt forced and out of place.
In my opinion, Tempest is targeted towards pre-teens and younger teens. The storyline was incredibly over the top and grandiose. In a sense, it reminded me of the overall feel of Percy Jackson. I am not saying I did not enjoy Tempest, because I did. I just feel like the older audiences will have a harder time accepting the string of events (and reasons behind them), than a younger audience. There were a couple of instances when I was reading Tempest that I had to take a huge leap of faith with where the storyline was progressing; I caught myself thinking "that is incredibly unlikely" or "that doesn't make any sense". I simply had to sit back and think, is this book written for you? Would you have thought it made sense at 12? Once I did that, I was able to sit back and enjoy Tempest for what it was - an exciting and extravagant adventure story.
The same thinking can be applied to the villain of the story, Andrina. To me, she was not fleshed out and was rather one dimensional. But again, if you digress back to the state of a 12 year old, I am sure you will love her. I know I certainly didn't care if my villains were fleshed out then. I just wanted them to be evil and for them to loose in the end.
Unfortunately, I think it is difficult for some people to look at a book like this. They cannot read as a younger self; they cannot accept it for what it is. If you read Tempest wanting a young-adult paranormal romance with tons of character development, a sensible plot and fleshed out villains, then I can tell you right now, you are not going to like it. But if you can go into it as a pre-teen and simply enjoy the ride, you will find it rather entertaining. Tempest certainly isn't my favorite book of all time, but I did enjoy it.

Refusing to do what had to be done in order to save the world. Even at the nd when she knew that it would save the world she tried to get out of it. Once again gret book but terrible charcter in the form of Janelle.

Can someone please tell me the difference between this book and the other version called Tempest, a young adult fantasy. I read the other one and I was wondering what was different.

This book starts slowly and is a little confusing at first but as it develops it gets better. The end is ok but could be better.

Overview
Destroyers, Book OneSixteen-year-old Janelle never thought the gray spiral birthmark on her arm meant anything special. That is, until she meets Gary, a boy her age with a birthmark exactly like hers. Gary’s attractive, brooding, and perfectly normal…except for the fact that he materialized out of a dangerous hurricane right in front of her. Janelle’s certain of only one thing. Gary’s mark—and hers, too—mean something, but he’s reluctant to tell her what.
At last she squeezes the truth from Gary about their markings. And the truth is utterly terrifying: Janelle and Gary are more ...
