Overview

Living in small town Rockabill, Maine, Jane True always knew she didn't quite fit in with so-called normal society. During her nightly, clandestine swim in the freezing winter ocean, a grisly find leads Jane to startling revelations about her heritage: she is only half-human.

Now, Jane must enter a world filled with supernatural creatures alternatively terrifying, beautiful, and deadly- all of which perfectly describe her new "friend," Ryu, a gorgeous and powerful vampire.

It is a world where nothing can be taken for granted: a dog can heal with a lick; spirits bag your groceries; and whatever you do, never-ever-rub the genie's lamp.

If you love Sookie Stackhouse, then you'll want to dive into Nicole Peeler's enchanting debut novel.

Out of the blue...a good book.

I was searching through all the fantasy books looking for something that wasn't just another book about vampires as the current trend seems to be. Although there are vampires in this book it also has a just about every supernatural creature you could ever imagine or may have read about. The main character Jane is a woman many of us can relate to. When we meet her she is working in a bookstore and has let her past pain shape her present day life which has kept her a little introverted and odd, but a very likable character. I read this book straight through and loved the scenes between Jane and her friend Ryu (hot, hot, hot). The story is great and interesting and the author has a laugh-out-loud sense of humor. If you are able to get past the cover (which I love) then you've already figured out this book is not for kids it is an adult book that makes Twilight seem like Sesame Street.

    A smart, stunning, fun debut

First, wow, this heroine is vulnerable, fascinating, careful and just all-around lovely. So refreshing. Also, there's my favorite kind of love triangle brewing here where both options are hugely attractive, but you definitely know who the hero is. Yummy imaginative world building with dashes of smutty goodness all along the way.

This series has taken its place in my pantheon of bright, shiny, sexy, go-to series, right next to Kresley Cole's and Charlaine Harris's. The next can't come soon enough.

    Fun read

This is a great mixture of all of the supernatural genres put together with an interesting back story. It zips right along and the characters are all interesting, well developed, and entertaining. Give it a try.

    Tempest Falling

I bought this book because i had heard it was like the Sookie Stackhouse books and being as they are my all time favorite books i thought I'd give Tempest Rising a chance. It is NOTHING like the Sookie books, There are so many creatures introduced in this book it feels like it's all over the place, the relationship between Jane and Ryu is mainly based around sex, there's no relationship building at all, All through the book i was waiting for the plot to make itself known, but it wasn't until the last few chapters it finally appears, leaving me feeling like the book should of been longer, it's a very quick read and simple. (It's like hi I'm Jane, i met Ryu,and a bunch of creatures, some bad, the end.) It just needed MORE. Sorry to sound so harsh it was Nicole Peelers first book and all so i really hope her other Jane True books will be more descriptive and have more of a foundation to them, i will read the second book just to see if perhaps the story starts to pick up from there but if not i wont buy anymore Nicole Peeler books

    Charming Supernatural Fantasy

This debut is enchanting. The first-party narrative follows the experiences of Jane True, a human/selkie hybrid. Jane is truly likable with an unpretentious, sincere, and good-hearted, (sometimes humorous), personality. The supporting characters are quirky and engaging. The hidden, supernatural world created within the novel is captivating and imaginative. Jane's small coastal town is pleasingly quaint; the surrounding woods and shoreline are evocative; and, the bordering sea with its mammoth, off-shore whirlpool is mesmerizing. The Faerie Court visited by Jane is vividly described; and, the book's supernatural creatures are varied and finely detailed. The plot winningly combines a murder mystery with a coming of age tale. And, the romantic sub-plot is enjoyable, amusing and occasionally sizzling. The narrative flows beautifully and is punctuated by periods of intense action. The mystery is thrillingly resolved, and the book ends with a finish that leaves a reader satisfied but wanting more. There's a refreshing naivety about Jane which is very attractive. In addition, the book employs an entertaining, lighthearted humor. This is truly fun read, and I'm looking forward to reading the second book.

Read this if you like a chuckle along with love and fantasy suspense of murder.

This is another book which I enjoyed so much I was not able to put it down. I wanted so badly to stay up all night and finish reading it, thats how much I loved the humor and the characters.

We meet Jane, who lives with her slightly ailing father to help take care of him in a small home town of Rockabill. The appearance and disappearance of Janes mother has the towns people a little wary of her. Then there is that dark past, or deed of eight years ago, that has the small town whispering and starring at her all the time. A small town that seems to never forget, let alone forgive. This has caused Jane to take to staying to the shadows and not catching anyones eye to prevent an uncomfortable situation with a few of her biggest fans.

In meeting Jane you learn quickly she is a swimmer. But, not any ordinary swimmer. She is such an exceptionally strong swimmer she swims in the outskirts of one of America's deadliest whirlpools, in winter with freezing cold water, naked. But, during this particular swim she spies a body spinning around in the Old Sow, the name of the large whirlpool.

This book introduces you to many great mythical characters with great potential abilities that could easily complement Jane. You have your share of supernatural creatures here; kelpie, selkie, vampires, nahuals, and many, many others.

We are introduced to an Investigator, Ryu, who is investigating more than the dead body of Jakes and is more than what Jane realizes. Janes relationship with Ryu is a unique one with love. I have loved these two together with the tension and understanding they share, along with making me smile and chuckle at the humor shared.

There is a lot of great humor in the book. I found myself smiling and chuckling at Jane and her little comments or thoughts. One of my favorite humor lines from Jane is, after being chased through the woods for a short while by some animal which she does not know what or why it is chasing her. "I wasn't running now so much as stumbling quickly, panting like a geriatric lion." There are a few references in the same scene that made me chuckle but this one almost got me in trouble for reading while at work. I could rather understand what Jane was feeling and felt it myself. Also, with the whirlpool being named Old Sow the town has adopted many pig reference names. Reading Ryus responce to these names and thinking on them myself as I read I got a little chuckle everytime.

Ryu seems to be a huge influence on Jane with helping to bring her out of her shell, and letting Jane be who Jane is. Jane has a lot thrown at her at once in this new crazy world with different rules, and she handles all the news very well... by running. No she doesn't run away in the book, but when the battles start she does what many of us think of and that is run. However, even in her running she fights for what she believes. Through all the craziness Jane grows greatly as a character, both physically and mentally. Jane is now ready to grow to her full potential, or at least start moving down that path for book 2 in the series.

There is alot of room for the growth on these secondary characters in future books to accent Jane and even additional storylines. There is a lot of growth for Jane to do as well. I have fallen for the books and will be faithfully waiting for the next book, Tracking the Tempest to come out. A great, enjoyable read.

A fantastic start to a great new series. One of the years must reads!

Tempest Rising is the impressive debut novel by Nicole Peeler. Let me start out by stating my biggest complaint about this novel: why did it take Ms. Peeler this long to write and publish Tempest Rising? I LOVED this story and I can not wait for the release of the sequel titled Tracking the Tempest. Fantastic writing, enjoyable story line, and loveable characters. Ms. Peeler is gifted with the talent to write humorously without turning her characters or storyline into brainless fodder. I was hooked by page 5 and simply could not put this book down. Not only is Ms. Peeler one of the best new authors to the genre this has to be one of the top ten books of the year. Buy this book, take it home and read it immediately, you will not regret it!

    fun urban fantasy whodunit

Rockabill, Maine is a small town that is home to the local pariah Jane True. The townsfolk hold her culpable for the death of her lover Jason, but not as much as she blames herself. She never told him that she can swim in the icy water and not feel the cold. During one of her nocturnal swims, Jason saw her and tried to rescue her but died in the whirlpool Old Saw.

One night while swimming, she rescues a body from Old Saw. When she brings the body out of the water she realizes the dead victim is Peter who came to town to write a book. When she goes back to her place on the beach she meets Nell the gnome, a talking dog Anyan and a kelpie. They explain to Jane that her mom is a Selkie who after six years on land returned to the sea and her seal form. An outside investigator arrives in Rockabil to inquire into the drowning death of Peter, a halfling like Jane. When she meets Ryu the vampire, they fall into instant lust. His assignment gets complicated when a goblin arrives to take over his mission but the goblin is killed as is her superior. Peter apparently was working on a halfling project; which Ryu feels is tied to the Alfar elves who rule the supernatural world, but Jane never expected to be thrust into the center of an eerie schism that could kill her and tear asunder the supernatural realm.

Readers who enjoy the Weather Warden series by Rachel Caine and the Sookie saga by Charlaine Harris will want to read the misadventures of Jane True. The two decades or so heroine copes with an inner strength with one tragedy after another, but the serial murders of halflings frighten her like nothing before. Although perhaps too much paranormal is introduced in this fun first urban fantasy whodunit, fans will enjoy the terrific TEMPEST RISING in the Pine Tree State.

I love the concepts, storyline, and most importantly, the.heroine. I have a virtual pile of other ebooks, but I'm buying the next book right after I hit post. I may or may not actually sleep a little before the sun comes up. It depends on how bad the temptation to continue the journey is. ;)

    Great Paranormal

Great characters and a well thought out plot. An awesome start to a series. Jane True is real, flawed, and layered. The sexualized relationship with Ryu is intense and well explained. Anyans growing involvement is intriguing. This book is a strictly adult version of the Twilight series. Only better. Looking forward to reading the second. Downside - the author uses too many pop culture references. Feels a little bit forced. A small setback in an otherwise well done piece. - skylah1053

    I liked Jane...

Although I liked Jane, Ryu I was not so fond of I'm not sure if it was because he was the cliched vampire that seems to be in every novel or if it was just his relationship with Jane but I really dont like him. That being said the story itself and the other characters were wonderful. The only other issue I had besides the constant pop culture references was the middle of the book seemed to only be about Ryu and Jane and their physical relationship. I felt left in the dark about the halfling killings and that maybe they werent taking it seriously. However like I said I really enjoyed Jane and I will be reading the next one and hope that maybe Anyan takes a bigger role as I find him a more appealing character.

I really wanted to like this book, but I just couldnt. There was a lot of potential but it was too flighty. The main character worrying about her shoes while people are dying around her? Sorry, just not for me.

review taken from One Book At A Time

I really struggled with my rating for this one. It's a promising start to a series, but I didn't connect with the characters as much as I would like.

I think the issue here is that Jane feels very juvenile, and the cover doesn't help. It's not that I didn't like her character because I did. I just think that living her life as the social outcast has left her in a little bubble. So, when the bubble breaks and reveals this whole supernatural world, she sees it through the eyes of a child. Which is funny at times and annoying at others. But, by the end of the story, I think she's grow up a little.

I liked the supernatural world that Peeler has created although it's a tad overwhelming. Instead of concentrating on a few supernatural beings, we get everything you could think of a few that you wouldn't. Some of them were really interesting like the genie (he made me laugh). While others were down right creepy like Jimmu. It's a large cast of characters, but I never felt bogged down with information like I have been with other first books in paranormal series.

I'm still not sure about Ryu. I just don't think he's good for Jane. He's devoted to her for now, but sex seems so casual for him. I don't think that's how Jane operates. He sure knows how to wine and dine though, and I get how Jane is attracted to him.

It was a fun beginning to the series, and I will be continuing it.

    hmm...

I was very suprised by this book's faced-paced-rush-it-all attitude. I was very attracted to it and wanted to keep reading, but at the same time it made me feel angry or sad. Angrey propably at the author how rushed it all (but who knows, it could be her style of writing, *shrugs*); and sad because the main character Jane falls for Ryu so fast that you don't have time to think about it before they're kissing or making out on the beach. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait for the next book to come out in july. It's just not what I expected it to be I guess. Not a fan of love at first sight; there has to be some friendship(or conflict) between the two characters before they start thinking of even remotely loving each other. Oi, so that's what I felt about it. Even though it's fantasy/sci ficion, I still think there could have been a little more sugary sweetness before passion sets in.

    Good book, not great.

Truly, I actually picked up the second book of this series because of the cool looking cover without knowing it was the 2nd one, oops! Well, I bought the first book and read it...it was good, but that all it really was, just good. I think I realized this after the whole OMG SEX! thing blew-over, ha-ha. Some of the characters were really well written, but Jane, the main character, just annoyed me for some reason, it wasn't really romantic at all.
Bottom line, good book, but would not pay to read it (I sold it after I was done with it). Also, a bit cliche to be taken seriously. Not by much, but it's there.
