Can love change paths like a storm?
HE WAS THE CALM BEFORE HER STORM

A violent tropical storm is nearing Key West, and Joy, a young waitress, worries for her love, Brian, who may be out at sea.

Unable to reach her boyfriend by phone, uncertainty lashes at Joy because he may still be out at sea and possibly battling the impending hurricane--or he may be home and safe. She has no way of knowing.

Joy's friends can't seem to help her to stop worrying about Brian. But a new customer who arrives at Joy’s restaurant, a handsome and charming southerner by the name of Derrick, allows Joy's worrying mind to get a much-needed break. Yet, is it her mind that gets a break, or will it be her heart as well?

The storm eventually passes, and in its wake, Joy learns of a shocking betrayal by two people she trusts the most.

Does love conquer all? Can Joy forgive, or will the truth send her rushing into the arms of the one who deserves her more? And who is that one exactly?

EXCERPT
After the show, Derrick suddenly felt a surge of anxiety as he realized there was no further reason for Joy to hang out with him. Was it possible she might be feeling the same way?

“So, that was fun,” she said innocently.

“So, is that it?” asked Derrick.

“What do you mean?” Joy asked, knowing very well what he meant.

“I mean, so is that it? Like, we walk off into the night and pretend that there wasn’t something between us? A spark?” Derrick implored. “Something?”

Joy knew exactly what he was talking about, but wasn’t close enough to identifying her own feelings and acknowledging his. She felt something about this guy she had just met, but all of her experience in Key West warned her that he was only here for a few days. That anything and everything he said was designed to provide one more memorable experience in his one-week vacation.

And then he was off to wherever it was he came from.

“I love you” could mean “I want to fuck you.” “I want to be with you forever” could mean “I want to be with you forever, at least until my flight back to Iowa in a week.”

Meet the Author

Rachel Gilberts was born in Nashville, Tennessee - her hometown, then and now. She works as a Humanities professor and as a freelance self-published Christian book author.

Her parents are Frank and Jemimah. Frank, now deceased, supported the family by tending their family farm while Jemimah worked as a local bookshop supervisor. Jemimah, now retired, helps supervise work at the farm.

Rachel has three other siblings – Ruth, aged 42, and twins John and Jacob, both 36.

Ruth, husband Paul, and daughter Martha now tend to the farm. John, still single, is a civil engineer, while Jacob, now married to college sweetheart Marie, is a hotel front desk manager.

Rachel has a child named Maryanne, aged 12, by her husband, Keith. Keith was once a one-hit country singer but is now a comptroller at an insurance and financial services company. Rachel and Keith parted ways for “personal differences."

Rachel, as alleged by Keith, is content with “small town” life, and he is not. Custody is not an issue as Keith participates actively in raising Maryanne.
