Overview

First published in 1990, The Temple of My Familiar, Alice Walker’s follow-up novel to her iconic The Color Purple, spent more than four months on the New York Times Bestseller list and was hailed by critics as a “major achievement” (Chicago Tribune).

Described by the author as “a romance of the last 500,000 years,” The Temple of My Familiar follows a cast of interrelated characters, most of African descent, and each representing a different ethnic strain—ranging from diverse African tribes to the mixed bloods of Latin America—that contribute to the black experience in America.

Filled with the author's unique combination of magic and reality, this book is a sweeping yet intimate novel about people who are tormented by the world's contradictions--black vs. white, man vs. woman, sexual freedom vs. sexual slavery, and past vs. present. National Ads. (Trade)

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Part love story, part fable, part feminist manifesto, part political statement, Walker's novel follows a cast of interrelated characters, most of them black. and each representing a differ ent ethnic strain that contributes to the black experience in America. Marred by didacticism, theorizing and pontificating, ``the book never achieves the narrative power of The Color Purple ,'' noted PW . (May)
Ursula K. Le Guin
The richness of Alice Walker's new novel is amazing, overwhelming. A hundred themes and subjects spin through it, dozens of characters, a whirl of time and places. Men are touched superficially: all the people are passionate actors and sufferers, and everything they talk about is urgent, a matter truly of life and death. They're like Dostoyevsky's characters, relentlessly raising the great moral questions and pushing one another toward self-knowledge, honesty, inducement. -- The San Francisco Review of Books

    A Wonderful Journey

The 'Temple of my Familiar' is like taking an emotional trip through the lives of the various characters. I couldn't imagine making some of the decisions that they did, but they were all fascinating. Alice Walker has the ability to make her characters come alive, and I was transported, I could actually see myself playing in the trees with the cousins. The people became a part of me, when I finished the book I missed my new friends. It doesn't get any better than that.

    Certainly intrigued me!

The way the lives of all the characters touched each other is what kept the book together for me. However each sub-story was so very engaging I had to go to the next page. To this author's credit is the first time that I am buying a book after reading a borrowed libary copy! Yup it certianly intrigued me enough to want to read it again and again and maybe go deeper into some of the issues the book brings to the fore fore me.

Reality With A Touch Of Magic

The Temple of My Familiar is one of those novels that you read once, and immediately feel that you've found something within yourself that was hidden from you. It opens up a door that has been shut through socialization. This novel brings out the true human spirit and thought . . . free from all rules as taught. You read it a second time and discover something that you missed the first time. Read a third, fourth, fifth time and enjoy it as though reading it for the first time.

    Find Yourself Within This Book

If you didn't quite get it the first time, read it again. This is definitely a book you have to read over and over again to get every single detail. You may also find that you learn something new about yourself each time you read it.
