Any beginner can use this manual to produce a tattoo.
VOYA
This slim, beautifully illustrated book is essentially a simple how-to for creating temporary tattoos. Three techniques are described: making a stamp, making a design with paintbrushes, and making a stencil. The tattoos themselves are grouped by theme, such as astrological symbols, nature, calligraphy, and international symbols. Each type of tattoo has an illustration, and all look professionally done. Materials, including ink, and techniques are described briefly but thoroughly in a step-by-step fashion. Any beginner can use this manual to produce a tattoo, but artistic ability is a plus in doing the free-form tattoo. The attractive teen models used here are representative of all the major ethnic groups. Ornamental and painless, temporary tattoos are an excellent alternative for teenagers who want body decoration without risk and the ability to change the art frequently and easily. Parents and educators can use the book as an alternative response for young people who are pushing for the permanent tattoo. Illus. Photos. Children's Literature
This book provides detailed instruction and a variety of designs that can be used to create temporary tattoos, with lots of photographs that show the process and finished results. It starts with a comprehensive list of products, design materials and step-by-step instructions for creating stencils, stamps and tattoo tracings. With the emphasis on non-dye, temporary techniques, this is a safe way to experiment with body art. There are detailed descriptions for twenty tattoos, with additional motifs in a design glossary at the end. Designs are organized by theme and each is assigned a level of difficulty from one to three. 2001, Firefly Books, $9.95. Ages 14 to 18. Reviewer: Sally Heldrich
School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-This book offers an alternative to permanent body decoration. The authors discuss skin tones and skin care; list products that may be used in the application of temporary tattoos; and provide ideas for making stamps, stencils, and designs, along with precautions to avoid skin damage. The majority of the book is comprised of detailed instructions for the various designs, which include motifs for Halloween, from nature and the zodiac, and from Asian sources. There are suggestions for colors and techniques for different skin shades. Each design is illustrated with color photographs of young people wearing the work in progress and the finished product. Every project is identified with a degree of difficulty from easy to challenging. A fascinating book that will fly off the shelves in any library serving teens.-Elizabeth Stumpf, Clearfield Middle School, PA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Preface

Since the dawn of civilization, the idea of body decoration has always stimulated the imagination and given rise to many different designs. From the earliest kind of body painting, done with colored powders made from mineral and vegetable matter to tattoos, scarification and other types of skin ornamentation, the human body has continued to be altered and embellished in the never-ending quest for perfection. Echoing this past that is distant and yet near, body decoration has today become fashionable again. It is enriched by elements borrowed from other cultures. In that aspect, it reflects a new awareness of our world. The enormous lexicon of skin decoration takes its images from such diverse subjects as calligraphy, mythology and the graphic arts, and its nourishment from the poetic language of humankind's symbols.

The designs for skin decoration that follow have nothing to do with the concept of permanent tattoos; in fact, they offer an infinite scope. Fleeting and painless to apply, they are first and foremost ornamental. Light and fanciful, they help to liberate our body images from old-fashioned conformity. And yet these decorations are not entirely superficial. As motifs, each has a symbolic message, be it sentimental or idealistic or intellectual. Each design has something to say. In doing so, these are expressions of impermanence that also celebrate the magical beauty of the moment.
