Children's Literature - Children's Literature
A mother bird is searching for food for her nest full of hungry, young birds. As she flies around the meadow, she spies all sorts of wonderful creatures, big and small. The creeping, crawling, hopping, running animals and insects are hidden in the picture and under flaps for the reader to find. Each double page has a different number of creatures. Finally, at the end the flap folds out to show the whole meadow and the ten bright eyes of the baby birds. This is a nice introduction to patterns, shapes and numbers.

PreS-Gr 1-As a mother bird sets out to find food for her young, she encounters a lush green field, deer, a river complete with ducks and fish, and more. Like this character who rambles a bit through her environment, children should be encouraged to take their time meandering through the pages, which will give them many opportunities to learn numbers, shapes, and patterns. In addition, the back cover lists 11 different activities that reinforce these concepts. The simple rhyming text works wonderfully with the eye-catching, childlike pictures, and each full-page spread includes a lift-the-flap that expands on these illustrations that are just bursting with warm, cheerful colors.-Rachel Fox, Port Washington Public Library, NY
