David D. Burns, M.D., a clinical psychiatrist, conveys his ideas with warmth, compassion, understanding, and humor unmatched by any other writer in the self-help field. I have discovered that one of the most important keys to recovery, regardless of your age, sex, or race, is the willingness to help yourself.

Some people do not seem to understand or accept this simple idea. They are quite happy to complain endlessly about how bad things are as long as they don't have to do anything to solve their problems. They see themselves as victims of unfair circumstances and wait passively for someone or something to fix things for them. Sadly, that usually doesn't happen. Years later they are still feeling miserable, waiting for justice or magic to make their lives better.

Of course, this passive approach to personal growth has sometimes been reinforced by mental health professionals and the media. The stereotype of psychotherapy portrayed in popular books and movies is lying on the couch and saying whatever comes into your mind, while a kindly psychoanalyst listens and nods knowingly from time to time. After years and years, something wonderful is supposed to happen.

    Love It!!!

    I conduct self-esteem workshops for young girls and picked up this book while at the library. I read it and loved it. I am going to purchase the book and leader's manual for my personal library. I got alot of insight from this book that can help me in my workshops.

    This book is wonderful

    This book gives you a good understanding of how your thoughts control your moods and enables you to do exercises to really think through what the author is saying and apply it to your own thoughts and feelings. This book really helped me look at myself and see how I was in control of my reactions and emotions and I have been able to see how those thoughts consequently control my moods.

    this book has me feeling like i can live happily now

    this book is great. its interactive, and motivating. its a lot of work, and a commitment, but there is no change without work. i needed change. i feel more rooted in who i am. i do not suffer from low self esteem normally, so the title scared me...but cover up the cover of this book with a paper bag and forget it. it more about loving yourself enough to want to feel better, think better and be better.

    A Great Book To Feel Happiness Agian !

    Any one with deppresion should get this book. it help me alot; with out it i would of been hopeless.

    How you see yourself is crucial

    Thank you, Dr. Burns!

    My outlook on life has been changed for the better in only the first few days of reading and working through this to-the-point self help workbook. Dr. Burns asks the reader to put thoughts on paper, then examine them for reasonableness, adjusting where necessary to arrive at a more optimistic, realistic view of life events. I can't wait to see how good I will feel by the last chapter!

    THIS BOOK TRIVIALIZES SELF-ESTEEM

    Those who struggle with self-esteem issues understand that the process of developing healthy self-esteem is a daunting task. It takes determination, perseverance, and time to change one's attitude, develop new skills, and to become comfortable with a new way of thinking. Even the title of this book trivializes the subject. Such books may be helpful for people with basically healthy self-esteem who are going through a difficult time, but are discouraging for those who really struggle in this area because they know they cannot develop healthy self-esteem in 10 days--they've been trying for years.
