Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
One of the "Classic Books with Holes" series based on a children's nursery song, this one is based on the song, Ten Fat Sausages. Although this one may be unfamiliar to Americans, many of the other books feature the familiar songs of There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, Old MacDonald and The Farmer in the Dell. The large, colorful books use these repetitious songs and accompanying cut-out pages to keep youngsters focused as the various stanzas of the song that are sung or read. In this book, a man on the street offers sausages for sale beginning with ten. As successive pages are turned and more and more children buy the sausages, the number he has for sale decreases and the number of children with sausages increases. Cut-outs at the bottoms of the pages keep track of amounts with printed numbers. Each sausage sold creates a cut-out from the previous page—until all are gone. It is a counting song by twos and readers can keep track. The cartoon-like drawings are humorous and add to the fair-like atmosphere. For those unfamiliar with the tune, it is printed on the outside of the book. The books are available as board books, soft cover books or Big Books with additional activities. 2005, Child's Play, Ages 4 to 7.

A bit of a twist to the familiar counting song, in that the child can see where the sausages are going and the holes left when they disappear. Children love, and quickly master the repetitive singing game and with a large group the counting backwards can be demonstrated by using a diminishing throng of ten sausages (the children). They count how many are left after each verse. It encourages discussion and observation of numbers. Equally good one-to-one as in a large group. Colourful, playful illustrations help the text along.
Summer 2007 English Four to Eleven
This is an entertaining, fun book suitable for Foundation and key stage 1, which introduces a number rhyme and counting in steps of two in an interactive and enjoyable way.
The rhyme begins with ten fat sausages sizzling in the pan but gradually the sausages go POP and BANG! The children in my reception class enjoyed counting the sausages as they disappeared and finding where they were shown in the attractive illustrations. Di cutting is used effectively from page to page to help children count forwards and backwards in steps of two, which makes the counting rhyme interactive and fun.
I recommend this book to teachers as a useful numeracy resource and also as a good stimulus for observation and discussion. The English Association
