Ten Great American Composers

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Presented chronologically, here are well-known historical names such as Sousa, Joplin, Ives, Gershwin, Ellington, Copland, Barber and Bernstein. There are two living composers: Philip Glass and Ellen Zwilich. Each chapter presents a brief biography that includes information on the type of music they created. In the Preface, the authors suggest listening to each composer's music, for it is the only way to learn about it. Astutely, they go on to say that the readers (and listeners) may find they like some of it but probably not all. Good insights are provided into the way the composer's life influenced his or her music. Part of the "Collective Biographies" series, this provides a good introduction to American music and its evolution, as well as to the individual composers and their contributions. Chapter notes, Internet addresses and an Index are included. 2002, Enslow,
