Overview
Ten in Texas includes -- perhaps not surprisingly -- ten new recordings by ten Texas artists, some well known, some cult figures, and some new on the scene. Ten Texas songwriters are likewise given prominence on this collection. Joe Ely delivers a relaxed take on Kris Kristofferson's classic hangover song "Sunday Morning Coming Down," while Asleep at the Wheel offer a solid version of Don Rollins' sexist standard "The Other Woman." The highest-profile appearance is a live cut of Willie Nelson singing Ed Bruce's "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys." Although the crowd shows lots of enthusiasm, Nelson rushes the lyrics and his performance, unfortunately, is rather shabby. To find the most interesting stuff on the album one has to turn away from the better-known names. There's a fun take on Guy Clark's "Texas Cookin'" by Ruthie Foster and a enjoyable version of Red Steagall's "Lone Star Beer and Bob Wills Music." Dale Watson has the unenviable task of covering "The Grand Tour," a George Jones standby, but does a fine job by injecting the song with restrained emotion. Johnny Bush and Cornell Hurd offer a carefree, amusing take on Ernest Tubb's "There's a Little Bit of Everything in Texas." For anyone who enjoys classic country music or just happens to have a thing for Texas, Ten in Texas ought to prove mighty satisfying. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
