Overview

New York Times bestseller Lauren Myracle's long-awaited prequel to Eleven!

Winnie Perry is turning ten and ten is BIG. It means double digits, more responsibility, and being an almost-middle-schooler. Ten means that Winnie can handle anything, even a three-year-old baby brother and a practically teenage (and acting like it) older sister. And with her best friend, Amanda, by her side, Winnie plans on enjoying every last second of her last year in grade school.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Winnie Perry turns ten on March 11th, which is when she starts her journal for the year. Her tenth year is full of the usual ups and downs of most girls in that she has to cope with a bully, deal with her best friends being attracted to boys, decide which part of her older sister's advice she is going to follow, and survive her first almost boy crush. Winnie is a sweet girl who cares about her younger brother, Ty, and has a penchant for making up silly expressions such as "goodness gravy" and "silly custard." Girls who are ten, or about to be ten, or remember being ten, will definitely relate to Winnie and her fifth grade problems. Many will look forward to reading the sequels where Winnie turns eleven, then twelve, thirteen and fourteen. And teachers will enjoy recommending this book to their students who are feeling left out or bullied or confused. Reviewer: Sarah Maury Swan
School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—Going back to before the beginning of the series, readers meet Winnie on her 10th birthday and she is bursting with confidence and love. The story takes her through the rite of passage of entering double digits and the first stirrings of emergence from childhood. Now in fifth grade, Winnie has to deal with her safe and comfortable world changing around her. As her friends are starting to have crushes on boys, she has to decide whether to follow along or wait and be true to her own feelings. While the book does not have the depth of emotion or tackle some more serious issues as some others do, it has great kid appeal. Definitely a worthwhile addition to Eleven (2004), Twelve (2007), Thirteen (2008), and Thirteen Plus One (2010, all Dutton).—Catherine Brenner, Bethlehem Public Library, Delmar, NY
Kirkus Reviews

In this prequel to The Winnie Years series, fans meet their heroine as she celebrates her 10th birthday, secure in her family's love and her identity.

Winnie writes in a note to herself: "Being weird is much more fun than not being weird... I can handle anything, and the reason why is because I am me and I am ten and I am awesome." Winnie must remind herself of this when she encounters the changing emotional terrain of fifth grade. Myracle keeps Winnie refreshingly honest and perky as she faces down self-doubts, whether by announcing that she is not in that stage yet when the other girls in class decide they must all have crushes on boys or standing up to the bully Mindy. In this nuanced portrayal, Winnie also develops her EQ (emotional-intelligence quotient): she learns to listen to her friend Amanda, concede a point rather than be right, even feel empathy for Mindy. Winnie is not challenged with big questions the way Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's Alice is, nor does she have the complicated depth and eccentricity of Susan Patron's Lucky. She is simply the quintessential girl-next-door to whom young readers can comfortably relate.

A solid addition to a winning series, this provides the foundation for the characters and action inEleven(2004).(Fiction. 8-12)

    Book Worth Reading!

Funny and charming book, from the first page to the last. Highly suggested for any girl who wants facts before and after her ninth or tenth birthday about crushes, bullying, siblings, friends, vacations and other things, all wrapped up in the life story of Winnifred Perry as a ten year old. Lauren Myracle is a wonderful edition to authors such as Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, Lisi Harrison, Annie Bryant and even the great famous classic author, Frances Hodgson Burnett. Curl up and enjoy, readers!

    Cool!

I loved this book. Its totally more kiddish than the rest. Like eleven, twelve, thirteen, and thirteen plus one r more mature and serious but this books fun and cool and energetic. I feel that this is the REAL Winnie. But i want to keep it real, ok? So im not gonna lie but it was a bit weirdish going back to the the lil kiddie winnie years. And lets face it ; the characters were pretty much... out of character, like faded. And somethings were a lie. Like how in the book twelve it said that Winnies Aunt Lucy was large and kinda not that pretty but then in the book ten, they say Aunt lucy was very pretty and was model material. Also how in book eleven Winnie said that in fifth grade a girl called Mindy didnt like the secret santa gift winnie got her. But in Eleven, Winnie onlly said that Mindy told her,"sorry but im allergic to the peanut butter in the recess peanutbutter cups in my prezent" But in Ten, Mindy was veeeery ruude about the prezent to the point were she made Winnie cry, made them hate eachother, even drove them to beating eachother up on the playground. See? Things in Ten are pretty much a bit off even though its a good story afterall. I reeeeally cant help at all but giving the book five starz, cuz it IS a wonderful story. One of my fave authors too. Recomended for ten to twelve.
