Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
If you like board books that are a bit outre, then this series "Eyeball Animation" books may appeal. Two large eyeballs protrude from the front cover in the face of a dinosaur and appear again on the back cover in the face of another dinosaur. The text based on "Ten in the Bed" is silly and it counts backwards from ten, but these dinosaurs are not in bed. They are riding bikes, rafting, jumping, skateboarding, and undertaking a variety of activities that all end up with some mishap. Finally, all the dinosaurs are gone, and the book ends with "No more dinosaurs hanging on the brink….Poor little dinosaurs all extinct." If you enjoy rough and tumble humor and some plays on words, then this might be the board book of choice.

I give this at every baby shower I attend. It is great for boys or girls and teaches numbers in a funny way. Who doesn't love dinosaurs? Used to be able to get it in a cardboard book with actual protruding google eyes but can't find that anymore. That is even better. One of my favorite children's books.

Love this book - a great first dinosaur book. I started reading this book to my son when he was only 7 months. I was only able to read the first two lines on each page before he was ready to move on, but by 8 months he was captivated enough to let me read all the words on the page. He loved the googly eyes from the beginning and likes putting his fingers through the holes on the opposite page. The story is cute and their is a good rhythm to it. There is also a lot of rhyming which children love.

The goggle eyes are this books best selling point. The rhymes are a bit of a stretch of the tongue and the hint to the extinction of the dinosaurs, though cleverly fitted in, lacks build-up. Great book for a gift as it has great shelf appeal, but just another book that will crowd a shelf in the long run.

I bought this for my 5 year old grandson and I loved reading it in the bookstore and just knew he'd love it too. The googly eyes follow you all the way through the story, and it's a perfect read-along book.

We first got this book as a gift from my mother. It is fun to read and my son loves turning the pages and grabbing they eyes! The book uses what I can only guess is the proper names for the dinosaurs. I believe I am saying these names correctly, and they flow with good rhythm. At 15 months old my son doesn't know a dino from a dog but this is his favorite book. It recently got soaked in juice for a while, and it wasn't holding together anymore, so we got another copy. Excellent book, glad my mom found it for us.

Although this book is great in attracting almost any kid's attention, that is about all it does. The forever moving eyeballs encapsulated in water-filled plastic bubbles enchant children till no end. However, the literary content of the book is only suitable for older children. The board book format and the attention-grabbing eyes misleads many parents, infants, toddlers into thinking that this book is eductionally appropriate for any kid. However, with technical scientific names for dinosaurs like Pachycephalosaurus and difficult vocabulary such as mooth, geologic, aquiver, it is very important that there is a recommended age range appointed for this book.

My daughter, then just 13 months, loved this book from the beginning. Now, she is just over two and adores it even more. It is delightful! Wonderful rhymes, counting backward, superb illustrations, and not your average hard cover either. I even learned a little about dinosaurs. You'll find yourself reciting the text to your little ones because you enjoy it too! A must have!
