Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
There really are ten rubber ducks inset in the cover of this board book. It counts down from ten in this race—with various activities reducing the count. The way the ducks disappear is fanciful. One gets stuck behind a yellow submarine, several play with new friends—a green frog, a silvery fish and a turtle—while another is distracted by a dragonfly. Some of the little ducks have mishaps, like going the wrong way or getting caught by a fisherman's canoe, but finally one makes it to the finish line. There is a lot of detail in all of the pictures and since the ducks are moving along a stream opportunities exist to vary the settings. This variety offers much to discuss. The extra bonus comes in the final scene which presents the winning duck that can be squeezed to make a sound (not really a quack) with a smiling young girl holding the blue ribbon first place prize. It is subtitled "A Wacky Quacky Counting Adventure" and it does offer a degree of fun. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
