Overview

The Trauma ICU of a Level 1 trauma center is the setting for this thought-provoking novel, which reveals the ruthlessness of medical education and practice. James Fleming recounts a day in the life of a resident in emergency medicine at an urban teaching hospital. The novel's title, which translates loosely as "I thirst" echoes the Christ of St. John. Tengo Sed's protagonist, however, known only as Hovercraft because he is "always around, always feeling on edge," is not a savior but a hapless resident with a tendency toward mysticism. Through Hovercraft’s sleep-deprived eyes we see patients and their families, doctors, and nurses, and we share Hovercraft's increasingly nightmarish perceptions of a world in which things are not going right.

"The story is remarkably raw and honest, full of mystery instead of certainty, failure instead of success, and humanity instead of science."—Frank Huyler, author of Right of Thirst

"A brutal and beautiful book. I read it straight through in one sitting, totally absorbed, deeply touched and frightened at the same time. The writing is taut, edgy, and original with not a wasted word . . . James Fleming has written a small, tough masterpiece."—John Nichols, author of The Milagro Beanfield War

"Stripped-down, elemental, and willing to explore feelings of alienation and rebellion felt by a significant minority of medical students, interns, and residents."—Paul Linde, author of Danger to Self: On the Front Line with an ER Psychiatrist

Winner of the 2011 PEN Center USA Literary Award for Fiction

    Marlin's Bio

    Name: Marlin Cypher ((Yeah, weird last name. Feel free to tease him about it, if you like having your hair dyed green while you sleep.))

    Gender: O.o What's that?

    Age: 15

    Godly Parent: Apollo, but with the way he acts, you could easily mistake him for a son of Hermes.

    Looks: Dirty blond hair, deeply tanned skin, and green eyes that turn gold when using his power.

    Personality: He's funny, mischeivous, hard to anger, and likes to play pranks. But when it comes to defending the camp and/or other campers, he's usually serious. ((But if you're that intent on stalking him, you should really try to meet him yourself, instead of taking my word for it.))

    Crush: None... yet. ((Insert witty comment here.))

    Relationship: See above. ((Insert another witty comment here.))

    Skills: He's an excellent archer. But he's pretty good with a knife, whether it be throwing or swinging, if he has to use one. He's horrible at sword fighting, though.

    Power: He can bend or focus the suns rays around him, though it makes him tired if he does it for too long, e.g. a few hours. He's immune to fire, and he also learned a few ((mildly harmful)) curses from a child of Hecate once, which he will gladly use in his pranks. ((Curses as in the magical kind.))

    Weakness: He can't use his power at night, since the sun doesn't shine then. He also mildly dislikes water. ((Except when he's using it in pranks. Then it's hilarious.))

    Fatal Flaw: He's a risk-taker.

    History: Ask him yourself, if you really want to stalk him that badly.

    Other: See above. ((Insert witty comment here... again.))

    Sara's Bio: Version 3

    [I literally did a whole exquisite bio today and have to do it again. -_-]

    •||•NAME: Sara Yuki Hosho [Yeah, it's Japanese], or, if you know her well, Sara-san.

    •||•GENDER: Have you SEEN any guys named Sara? -_- &female

    •||•AGE: 14, but 15 soon.

    •||•FAMILY/PARENTS:
•Mother: Hera
•Father: John [Sara never really knew her dad, and only just learned his first name. His last name is unknown, so she took her cousins' last name.]
•Siblings: None.
•Other:
•~Lina, Noel, Karen Hosho, cousins in Japan
•~Linda Smith, her father's best friend's cousin's cousin three times removed. Pretty much Sara's only relative in America.

    •||•LOOKS:
•Hair: Long, silky jet black hair longer than her waist, anime style.
•Eyes: A clear, haunting amber that turns shades darker when she is upset.
•Skin: Pale, but not ghost white.
•Body Type: She has a slim, tallish athletic build, which allows her to sprint quickly.
•Clothes: Tiny amber earrings, a simple leather bracelet, and a dark grey necklace makes up her jewelry. Usually she wears jeans and a Abercrombie&Fitch shirt.

    •||•PERSONA: After being in camp for almost a few days, she's loosened up. Generally friendly to people she already knows, she's sarcastic in a nice way, compliments others, and is pretty friendly, though awkward when she meets new people. If you get her mad, she tends to highly insult you not so nicely...and starts speaking in rapid fire Japanese. Believe me, you do NOT want to see the English translations. o.o

    •||•WEAPONS: A celestial bronze dagger, which she can't use THAT well yet, as she never recieved proper training. Though with some practice, she could become deadly with it. She is no better with a sword, but enjoys flinging knives, which she excels at. She is probably the worst archer ever, though.

    •||•POWERS: She hasn't discovered any yet.

    •||•HISTORY: Sara will tell you herself uf you get to know her, but here is the basic outline:

    Her father was a famous businessman who traveled around the world, and didn't have time for her. As a result, she moved to Japan to live with her cousins at one month old. But the day she turned 13, her father died in a plane crash. She left Japan to live with Linda, who cared nothing about her. After she fought her first monster and almost died, she left the small apartment with a small pack of the things she owned. She found a sign and followed it here, to CHB.

    •||•WEAKNESS/FATAL FLAW: She stinks at archery, is terrified of giant, hairy spiders, and is s bit edgy around fire. Her fatal flaw is carelessness. She learned her flaw the day she fought her first monster. One stupid mistake could cost you your life.

    •||•CRUSH/STATUS: No crush[Yet...] and is single.

    •||•OTHER: Ask nicely.

    Heather's bio

    Name: Heather Cathleen Peatain

    Age: 14

    Godly Parent: Hephaestus

    Personality: At first she is quiet, reserved, pretty shy, and really socially awkward. If you get to know her, she can be one heck of a friend though. She's usually oblivious to most things going on. If she's mad, she can be really snappy and, uh...... firey. Is pretty much always sarcastic. Really stubborn. She's a lot better with adults than kids her age.

    Appearence: she has layered dark brown hair that goes down about mid-back and usually covers one eye, blue eyes, and thick-framed glasses. She's about 5'0 tall and medium build. She doesn't really smile very much.

    Attire: plain jeans that are a little torn and faded, hand-me-down black and white converse, a plain solid colored t-shirt, and a black hoodie. Jewelry-wise: just a pair of small silver earrings that look like they were made from spare peices around a forge. No makeup at all... ever (makeup is gross)

    Weapons: her ability to make nearly anything and her fire abilities. Yes...... she does consider those weapons. She also has a celestial bronze sword.

    Status: Single...... crushing, but not saying who

    Fatal Flaw: Her stubborness. She very rarely wavers her opinion until something drastic happens

    History: For a demigod, she actually had a pretty decent life. Of course her family moved around so much, she really just gave up on the whole friend thing, and none of her family (consisting of her mother, half-sister, and stepfather) seemed to know how to laugh or smile. She wasn't attacked very often and she always had a roof over her head, so she never really complained. One day, right after she and her family moved to New York, she was attacked, blah blah blah, unfascinating story about how she ran all the way here, making tiny explosives to keep the monsters at bay.

    Other: like pretty much all demigods, she's dyslexic and ADHD. A secret talent of hers is the guitar.

    Jasmine

    Name: Jasmine Windshill
    Age: 15
    Gender: Girl
    Godly Parent: Apollo
    Height: 5 ft 7 in
    Weight: 112 pounds
    Build: Lithe, willowy, flexible, long-legged, and muscular
    Hair: Long, black strands reaching her waist. She braids it when she's training or on a quest or whenever to keep it out of her face. Otherwise, she lets it hang loose around her face. She has bangs that are streaked with gold in a strange symbol
    Eyes: Violet colored and startlingly vivid
    Skills: Combat(hand-to-hand and with weapons), music, leadership, judging character, interpreting riddles, logic, climbing, swimming, basketball, sports in general, making friends, etc...
    Personality: Generally mistrusting at first, Jasmine is extremely loyal and a good fighter. She has a fiery spirit and never gives up. She has limitless reserves of determination and humor to lighten any mood, but sometimes sticks to the background. Jasmine is very curious, but a fast learner. She is a little ambitious and very logical. She is very competitive, never backing down from a challenge. Jasmine is great to have on your side during a battle, be it verbal or physical.
    Status: Single as a Pringle
    Crush: No comment.
    Powers: She isn't sure, really...
    Wears: Anything comfortable, really. Mostly jean shorts and t-shirts.
    Theme Song: Gold by Britt Nicole/Wake Me Up by Avicii
    Other: She is ADHD. Also, she has been at camp for 6 years.
