Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A library can never have too many horse books. Like dinosaurs, horses are a perennial favorite with young readers. Each title in the "Great American Horse" series has 24 pages, divided into one-page chapters and back matter. Full-page, full-color photographs face the text. This title details the trademark of Tennessee Walking horses, their smooth easy gaits, along with origins of the breed and the conformation characteristics of these horses. Easy-to-read text covers how these animals are used today as performer and show horse, as pleasure and trail mount, in movies, in therapeutic riding, and in law enforcement. The book concludes with a diagram of a Tennessee Walking horse's anatomy, related web sites, breed organizations, glossary of terms, and an index. Horse enthusiasts everywhere will enjoy this addition to the series. 2001, Gareth Stevens,

Gr 3-5-Lovely color photographs mark these compact titles. Double-page spreads feature a photograph or colored illustration on the right, with large-print text on the left. Each book discusses a particular breed and its distinguishing features, such as gait, coloring, body style, etc. The authors talk about how the type of horse came into being and its primary use. Each book features illustrious members of the group such as racers; sires; television, book, and movie stars; or rodeo performers. Sometimes a specific breeder or trainer is also discussed. All of the titles include a diagram of a horse with the parts identified and a scale by which the animals are measured. Horse-crazy kids will enjoy these offerings.-Sally Bates Goodroe, formerly at Harris County Public Library, Houston, TX Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
