Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Meagan Albright
In this fantastic new fantasy novel the main character, Marty, and his cousin Grace live with Uncle Wolf, a scientist obsessed with proving the existence of improbable creatures such as The Loch Ness Monsters. The mysterious disappearance of Marty's parents in the first novel, Cryptid Hunters, sets the dark, intriguing tone in this series of adventures populated by compelling and clearly delineated characters, giant squids, haunted freighters, a crazy chimpanzee, and dinosaur eggs. The fantastical elements and mythological origins of many of the plot points reward the well-read reader and encourage more reluctant readers to explore further the world of myths, especially since the unanswered questions of the ending will whet the readers' appetite for a sequel and leave them hungry for similar adventures. The fast pace and fascinating characters make this page-turner nearly impossible to put down. This series is a must purchase for public libraries and school media centers. Reviewer: Meagan Albright
School Library Journal
Gr 5–8—Since the disappearance of Marty's parents, he and his cousin Grace have lived with her father, the renowned cryptozoologist Travis Wolfe. This sequel to Cryptid Hunters (Hyperion, 2005) begins with Wolfe mounting an expedition in search of a mythological giant squid. Marty, his friend Luther, and Grace join the crew aboard the Coelacanth, a refitted freighter. Unknown to Wolfe, however, his archenemy Noah Blackwood is in hot pursuit, determined to steal the gigantic creature and destroy Wolfe and his reputation. Add hatching dinosaur eggs, a manic chimpanzee, cool gadgets, a nifty undersea nuclear submarine, ruthless villains, murder, and sabotage to the mix and you've got a high-octane page-turner that will reel readers in and keep them riveted. Several unanswered questions suggest another sequel may be in the works, which will make Smith's fans very happy.—Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK

Most Exciting Book In the Milky Way

Tentacles is a very suspenseful book by Roland Smith, and it is a science fiction novel. I think it is a very good book because it was so adventurous and it just makes me want to read more. There is a lot of interesting science and mechanical technology. This book takes place on a ship called the Coelacanth on the open sea during modern times.
The major problem in this book is that eWolf (a company) is looking for a giant squid and has 2 baby dinosaurs that hatched on board. Balckwood (a competing company/ person) is trying to steal the 2 baby dinosaurs, the giant squid when eWolf obtains it, and his granddaughter back. One major conflict was when Marty was pushed overboard by Butch (on Blackwood's side). Marty does not fall overboard into the water because of his fast reflexes so that he could grab the handle as he fell. Another conflict was when Butch got the 2 dinosaurs and Grace (Blackwood's granddaughter). Marty didn't want Grace to go but he knew that Grace wanted to find some answers so he let her go, but with a million dollar tracking device. Finally, Marty and Ted caught the giant squid and put it in their special pressurized pool so that it could live. Marty listened to Ted so that catching the squid would be no problem and they would make no mistakes.
The author has no main style except for a ton of suspense but the characters are all completely different and have totally different personalities. The author has many points in the story where something almost happens (really suspenseful). He makes the reader want to continue reading and not just stop and say that the book is boring. I think that anyone who enjoys action and adventurous novels would enjoy this book. This is a really good book.

    Amazing Read!!!

Tentacles is an astoundingly written action-adventure novel by Roland Smith. It contains all of the elements of good story and was a fast-paced and incredible read. On an ocean liner cruising slowly to New Zealand, Travis Wolfe, an intense crypto zoologist and cryptid hunter, is on the trail of a giant squid with the help of his scientific team. His nephew, Marty, and his daughter, Grace are also aboard. However, strange occurrences are happening aboard the ship due to the sabotage of Wolfe's arch enemy and competitor, Noah Blackwood, and his team of murderous comerades.
The main character, Marty O'Hara, is caught up in his uncle's adventures since his parents disappeared after a helicopter crash in South America. In the hunt for the giant squid and solving the many mysteries of the ship, Marty's skills are crucial to the expedition. He uses his quick thinking, mechanical genius, incredible intelligence, and even his cheerful humor to contribute to the search for the leviathan.
Smith's explosive and intense style of writing makes this a perfect book for any reader. Reading this book will instantly get you hooked, whatever kind of a reader you are. In this story you may even pick up a few biology facts along the way.
Overall, this must have been one of my favorite reads by a skilled author. Choose this book and you will not be disappointed!

I was really excited to read this book since I extremely enjoyed reading Cryptid Hunters. Tentacles may not be as good as its prequel, but the feeling of suspense still remains and keeps me entertained. It transitioned well from Cryptid hunters and how they're searching for a completely new cryptic animal the giant squid. Noah is still after grace and the eggs from the first book , but i was surprised that the outcome was much different. The ending left me craving a third book.

    Great Book!!!

In the great action packed novel, Tentacles, you learn about the story of Marty and Grace O'Hara, and their uncle Travis Wolfe and his crew hunting a giant squid. On this exhibition, they have to travel to New Zealand on a huge, supposedly haunted ocean liner called the Coelacanth. While they are on this ship, they are preparing for dinosaur eggs to hatch. The heroes had stolen the Mokélé-mbembé eggs from Dr. Wolfe's arch-rival Noah Blackwood in the first book of this breathtaking series, Cryptid Hunters. Mean while on the ship, there is a saboteur loose, who is believed to be working for Noah Blackwood. It'll be his job to kidnap Grace, steal the dinosaur eggs, and sink the Coelacanth. Is he up the challenge in this mind-blowing thriller?

This book is very good but.... they must show more that it is a 2nd book in a series. I bought it at my school book fair but it was lonely without the 1st book in the series next to it. The beginning was very confusing because I didn't read the first book . it is though a good in the middle because it gets lesss confusing. I recommend this book to any people who want to have a quick read-summer book club!

    Great book.

So my little brother had gotten this book for Christmas and I decided to read it. I am so glad that I did.
It is geared at a younger audience but I still found it a very enjoyable read even though I am seven years older than the intended audience.
I liked reading it because even though it is predictable it still has some surprises. I suggest that if you like anything to do with animals or adventure to read the book.

TENTACLES is the sequel to Roland Smith's CRYPTID HUNTERS. He continues the excitement begun in the Congo as Marty and Grace join Dr. Travis Wolfe in a new adventure to find a giant squid in the waters off New Zealand.

After Marty found out Grace was actually his cousin and not the twin sister he thought she was, their new life took them to the island of Cryptos to live with Grace's father, Travis Wolfe. This new adventure begins as their boarding school friend, Luther, arrives on the island.

The action starts off with a frantic chase to catch a chimpanzee named Bo as he terrorizes the island on a four-wheeler. Using Luther's wild and crazy flaming red hair as bait, they are able to not only catch the chimp, but also get him aboard the newly renovated ship called the Coelacanth bound for New Zealand to capture a giant squid.

At the same time that Travis Wolfe and his crew are preparing for their journey, the famous and evil Noah Blackwood is preparing his ships to intercept the Coelacanth in an effort to kidnap Grace, his granddaughter, and steal two priceless dinosaur eggs or whatever may have already hatched from those valuable eggs.

TENTACLES is filled with fast-paced action, high-tech gadgets, disguises, and double agents. Teens looking for adventure and intrigue are sure to like this one. There is excellent back-story information provided, so even those who haven't yet read CRYPTID HUNTERS can enjoy the story.

Readers who are already fans of the first book will also be pleased to discover that TENTACLES will probably not be the last adventure for Marty and Grace.

    Keeps you hooked!

Tentacles is an amazing book if you have ever read the first book "Cryptid Hunters" and you thought it was good, wait till you read this one. Tentacles tells the story of Wolfe's cryptid hunt on a big ship headed towards New Zealand trying to find a giant squid. Why that is going on his arch enemy is trying to stop this expedition and get the giant squid for himself. This book was my favorite of the two and is very suspenseful and is full of action and you might learn something about prehistoric life as you read. I think the book would be great for anybody ten and up. If you have read the Alex Rider series you would probably like this book. Peak is also a really good book by Roland Smith. You will definitely find it hard to put the book down if you start it. I recommend you go get it now and read it.

one of the few excellent sequels!

Most books that are sequels, unfortunately, do not live up to the standards put down by their predecessors. Roland Smith has managed to write an engrossing sequel that DOES live up to the first book. I probably would have re-read it by now, except my sister is borrowing it.
I am not the target audience for the book (I'm not 10-15 or a boy) but I thoroughly enjoyed both books. Adventure, right v. wrong, good banter, and a great story. What's not to love?
I recommend all of Smith's books, most especially the Cryptid Hunters series and the Zach's Lie series.
Since the "I Also Recommend" feature does not seem to be functioning (don't worry, I will keep it short):
The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins
Gregor the Overlander, by Suzanne Collins
    Airborn, by Kenneth Oppel
    Deception Point, by Dan Brown
The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan

    Exciting Sequel to Cryptid Hunters!

Tentacles, the sequel to Cryptid Hunters, is the book I wished I had to read as a child. Adventure, suspense, good verses evil, sibling rivalry, lots of fun James Bond- like gadgets and cryptids, (animals that are thought to exist, but have not yet been proven to exist) all jam packed into a fast paced thriller. Mr. Smith continues to spark young audiences with an exciting race against the evil Dr.Noah Blackwood to catch a giant squid in the waters of New Zealand, hatch eggs found in the jungles of the Amazon believed to belong to the mysterious cryptid, Mokele-mbembe and protect Grace (one of the main characters) from her grandfather, Noah Blackwood, collecting her too. True to his style, Mr. Smith's characters, Marty, Grace, Luther and Wolfe continue to show an acute awareness of right and wrong, moral decision making and love of their family. Tentacles appeals to 9-15 year olds, but really captures a very tough audience, boys of that age group along with adults who still appreciate a great modern adventure novel. Thrill seekers of all ages will enjoy the ride.
