Overview

It's another awful year at Bathory High for Vladimir Tod. The evil vampire D'Ablo is hunting for the ritual that could steal Vlad's powers. His best friend doesn't want to be his drudge anymore. And it's getting harder for Vlad to resist feeding on the people around him. When months go by with no word from Uncle Otis, and D'Ablo shows up demanding Vlad's father's journal, Vlad realizes that having a normal high school year is the least of his concerns. Vlad needs to act fast, and even his status as the Pravus won't save him this time.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
The third book in The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod finds the teen vampire honing his skills with his mentor as summer ends. With the dawning of sophomore year, Vlad carries the weight of the vampire world on his shoulders. He has recently discovered that he may be the Pravus, prophesized to rule over all vampires and enslave humans. D'Ablo, a vampire leader, seeks a ritual that will allow him to steal Vlad's status as the Pravus, while another bloodthirsty vampire seeks to hurt Vlad immensely. In addition to the supernatural challenges in Vlad's life, he also has to navigate the social jungle of tenth grade as his best friend seems to be drifting away and he begins questioning his girlfriend's motives. This midpoint in the series is the darkest yet; Vlad's future as the probable Pravus is in direct opposition to his own plans for his life. Fans will eat up this installment, but new readers will find sufficient back story to enjoy the book on its own. The relationships and characters that readers have come to know in the first two books are more fully explored here, exposing new flaws and challenges that allow for more realism in their interactions. Vlad reveals some significant weakening in his pledge not to feed on humans, opening the door for more vampiric action in the final two books of the series. This book will be highly anticipated by fans of the teen vampire genre. What is it like to be caught between the worlds of vampires and mortals? Vladimir, age fifteen, is a sophomore at Bathory High and a half-vampire. His father, a full vampire, fell in love with his mother, a human. After their deaths, Vladimir must survive between these two worlds, the only child to be born to a vampire and a mortal. In this saga Vladimir falls in love with beautiful Meredith but has trouble controlling his urges to suck her blood. He also fears the evil vampire, D'Ablo, who is trying to steal Vladimir's powers through a ritual. Vladimir has always been content drinking packaged blood, but as he gets older his appetite expands to include people. Can he control his thirst? Can he resist his natural instincts, or is he doomed to suck the life from someone he loves and cares about? Every night Vladimir suffers nightmares; he braces himself for the inevitable conflict with D'Ablo. Will Vladimir die at the hands of this evil vampire? In this haunting story, young readers will fall into a world where vampires and humans merge and meet a boy who is torn between the people he loves and his own vampire instincts. Reviewer: Suzanna E. Henshon, Ph.D.
School Library Journal
Gr 6–10—Vladimir Tod just wants to be a normal teen. Unfortunately that is impossible for a vampire who is the only one "living" in the small town of Bathory. Now starting 10th grade, he faces some typical teen problems. His friend Henry seems to be dumping him to hang out with the popular crowd. Pesky Eddie is determined to expose him, thinking this will bring him the popularity and fame he desires. Meredith has agreed to be his girlfriend, and he can't believe someone so perfect would want to be with him. He is troubled by terrible nightmares, and the need for human blood is growing extremely difficult to resist, putting Aunt Nelly, Henry, and Meredith at risk. The wicked vampire D'Ablo is determined to get rid of him and steal his powers for himself. Vlad needs to act fast if he is going to save himself and everything he holds dear. The plot is full of twists and turns, but the tone is darker and more intense than in the earlier books as Vlad struggles to overcome the obstacles thrown in his path and come to grips with who and what he really is. The stakes are high and the ending leaves readers dying for more.—Donna Rosenblum, Floral Park Memorial High School, NY

TENTH GRADE BLEEDS takes readers on the continuing adventures of a young vampire named Vladimir (Vlad) Tod.

Vlad is different than most vampires. He was born a vampire instead of created. Since the death of his parents - vampire father and human mother - he's been living with his aunt. There have been some bumpy times, but with the help of his vampire uncle and his best friend and drudge, Henry, he's survived his first year in high school and is about to begin his second.

The previous years have held some challenges for Vlad, but his tenth grade year is threatening to reveal some of the more potentially serious vampire issues. Uncle Otis headed off on his own adventures; however, Vlad wasn't really worried about his absence since the two have a mental connection that allows them to easily communicate. Otis isn't gone very long when Vlad discovers that the comforting communication seems to be missing. Now he doesn't have a clue where Otis is or how to get in touch with him.

Another new challenge is Henry. Their best friend relationship seems a bit strained. Henry finally admits his desire to be released as Vlad's drudge. First of all, is it possible? Secondly, can Vlad survive without the support and protection offered by a vampire's drudge?

The scariest change in book three is the fact that Vlad is beginning to have urges more typical of vampires. His blood supply has always come courtesy of his aunt's access to the blood bank at the hospital where she works, but he now is finding that the sweet scent of live human blood may be a temptation he might be unable to resist.

Combine these immediate concerns with continued problems from distant vampire councils, and Vlad may have more than he can handle. As evidence mounts that he might, in fact, be Pravus, life as a one-of-a-kind vampire is quickly turning dangerous.

Heather Brewer has joined the legions of authors writing vampire tales, but THE CHRONICLES VLADIMIR TOD series has many twists and turns that make it unique and will have teens excited to read each upcoming book.

10th Grade Bleeds? More Like This Book Bleeds!

10th Grade Bleeds by Heather Brewer from the series The Chronicles of Vladimir Todd, is about a teenage vampire, Vladimir. Vladimir is a sophomore in high school and life is tough for him. He is often made fun of because he's different although no one knows he's a vampire. He is being tracked down by Ignatius, a vampire who wants to kill him because of Vladimir's status as a pravus, a vampie who cannot be killed. Vladimir tries to live a normal teenage life while protecting himself and the ones he loves from Ignatius and the vampire council. The theme of this book, is that no matter how hard you try to live a normal life, it doesn't always work out because some people are just too different, like Vladimir. His life is somewhat normal but he always has to watch his back for the vampires trying to kill him and he can't have a girlfriend for fear of sucking her blood and people will always make fun of him because of how different he is. What I liked about this book is that the chapters about Ignatius are very gory and full of imagery, like on page 3, it says "Ignatius drew the curved blade along the whetstone slowly, the gritty sound filling his ears. It had to be sharp, sharp enough to slice into bone if necessary....But if the boy gave him any trouble, Ignatius would take his bloody pleasures slowly, so that the boy felt every bruise, every cut." (Brewer p3). However, what I don't like is the way Vlad tells his story in this book. It sounds very much like this book is told from a girl's point of view. For example, it says "The tears poured down Vlad's cheeks. 'Then why? Why can't you stay?'...Time passed, but Otis's car kept shrinking. Just like Vlad's insides." (Brewer p44-45). Vlad's emotions are more like a girl's than a guy's which makes the story more confusing. People should not read this book unless they like a lot of emotion coming from an over sensitive guy. It is a good story, but the wording just does not flow well.

Great Read for Adults and Young Adults

I read this book because my son really enjoyed it and I wanted to know what he was reading. I was impressed. I read a lot of children's literature but I have been searching for a character and a story to keep my 13 year old interested. He reads these from cover to cover without putting them down. He is usually a reluctant reader.

We accidently found this latest installment out on a shelf nearly two weeks before it was scheduled to be released and it continues to show growth in story and depth of character. I am impressed with how it continues to explore vampire lore from old to new without redefining (no sparkling vampires here) what a vampire is and is not. It laughs at those parts of the mythology it chooses to make irrelevant and it brings in some parts that are generally ignored in more recent vampire stories.

I highly recommend the entire series for anyone from about 11 up. I wish I still taught older children so I could introduce this to some of my more reluctant male readers!

    BURNING with Intensity!

This was a very enjoyable read for me. Not only does it depict the dramatic, action-packed life of a half-boy, half-vampire, but it is an addicting read that will blow your socks off! HOWEVER, it is not a very challenging read, and so I breezed right through this book. But I recommend it to most audiences, though it is more directed toward young adults and teens.

    Tenth Grade Bleeds

This book is a masterpiece of literature. You have to read this book. I liked the intensity of the vampire that is hunting young Vladimir Tod. And the deporting of Henry and Vlad. I also like the romance between Meredith and Vlad. I would recommend this book to anyone who like vampire and teenage drama.

By far the best in the series in first place. The one thing I like is that when you think its going to end but it doesent and it keeps on coming back. I really like this book that I read it a 2nd time and I don't normally read chapter books again. I will recomend this book for 6th grade to 8th grade.

    WOW!!!

    Tenth Grade Bleeds
    Heather Brewer
When I started to read the first book I wasn¿t to sure what to think, but then I started too really like it so I read the rest of the series. I love these books and the author.
Vladimir Tod, age 15, is a sophomore at Bathory High. Vlad is different than most vampires. He was born a vampire instead of created. His dad is a full vampire married his mom who was human. Since the death of his parents he's been living with his aunt. His uncle is also staying with them, so Vlad can learn how to use his vampire powers.
There have been some rough times, but with the help of his vampire uncle and his best friend he's survived his first year in high school and is about to begin his second year of high school.
I recommend this book for people that like action and mystery but also vampires. There is a lot of blood in this book, so if you don¿t like to read about blood I would not recommend this book for you.
I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars because this is not like any other book. Its original and unique, I really like this book and the other books in the series. This book is the best!

    Awesome

This book was really amazing it had lots of action.,,

The book was about a vampire named Vlad and he lives with his aunt because his parents died. His best friend is named Josh and he is Vlad best friend. Vlad is half human and half vampire.

The part I am at is when Vlad finds out that his Vampire Slayer friend is coming back to high school to stalk Vlad and try to kill him. Vlad has to be on the look out every second because the vampire slayer could be anywhere

I liked this book because it was bloody and had lots of action through the whole book. I recomend this book to kids because it never stop you can also picture everything that happens in the book. You will wanna read this book.

To find out what happens next your gunna have to read the book.

This is an AMAZING book to read!

10th grade bleeds was a very fun book to read like the ones before it. The book was fairly easy to read but it had its hard part like all books do. The book was based on a teenage boy named Vladimir Todd
The reason I enjoyed this book is because I like books about vampires and a book that will keep your attention throughout the whole book and that has a lot of secrets and thrills. Vlad finally gets Meredith as his girlfriend and Otis returns from his trip. This book and the rest of the series is a very fun and exciting book to read. It will always have your attention. If you enjoy reading thrilling books with suspense, and a book about Vampires, this is the book for you.

    EPIC!!!!!

Out of the whole series this book was the best. Heather Brewer did a very good job on this book. If you love books that keep you on the edge of your seat this is the book for you. I was starting to get interested about this book when all my friends started reading it. I love the action in this book. This book has a very twisted ending and I love it. I would hate to be in Vladimir's shoes at the first part of the book but at the end everything turned around. There is nothing wrong with a gothic boy and a secret. Vladimir might not think he is gothic but other people do. This is my favorite book I have ever read and I will never forget it. I have told all my friends that haven't read it that it is very good. All of my friends love this book.
Vladimir thought that his life couldn't get anymore messed up but he was all wrong. When everything goes downhill his Pravus power might not be able to save him this time. School is the same as always it sucks. Henry and Vladimir are still best friends and always will be. There will always be the jerk bullies pushing him around.
