From The Ashes Smolders But Lacks Flame

As it is with many franchises that license novels - be they movies, televsion shows or video game media cross overs - there comes a time that the creative integrity that once popularized an otherwise intriguing genre crosses a line that cheapens the previous or original work with poor quality popularized fluff pieces. Thus is the case with this bit of drivel that, at various times, is as banal as it is chauvenistic. The end result amounts to an engrandized version of fan fiction that is a very poor cross between Rambo and The Road Warrior. The novelizations of the first two Terminators movies by wordsmith Randall Frakes captured the feel of the films, conveying the intensity of the celluloid version with grace and ease. The prequel novel presented here does none of that, instead being trite and unconvincing as a prelude to the upcoming film. It can only be hoped that the novelization of the film itself, authored by Alan Dean Foster, lives up a the usual high standards Mr. Foster is known for. When all is said and done, Timothy Zahn's attempt at the Terminator franchise has hit a dead end. (liquidgee@comcast.net)

    I Also Recommend:

    A pretty good prequel book

Terminator Salvation is a war movie, after all, and this is a war book. The previous T3 and T2 series books have always focused largely on the present day, so this is a pretty stark contrast.

TImonthy Zahn's writing style is spot on, and always has been ( Heir to the Empire, anyone?), and he weaves a pretty good story, helping to establish how Connor and his group became formal members of the Resistance. It also tells the story of Kyle Reese and what he's been up to before Salvation; it's Reese's story I prefer. There's no real attachment to Connor except through his wife. Where she is compassionate, the book presents John Connor as slighly introverted, keeping personal thoughts to himself and in my opinion seeming uncaring about an operation that went south just before the book opened, although when Zahn enters the minds of other characters, especially Blair and Barnes, it is apparent John is anything but.

But I digress. I like Reese's story because he's just a kid. He's not the crazy hardened soldier you see in the eighties. He's living peacefully in a camp, protected by an old Marine who was training in Mexico on Judgement Day. He's really the heart of this story. I found mysef skipping over most of Connor's chapters just o see what Kyle Reese was up to. It also had more suspense: John Connor safe in a bunker? Big woot- Kyle Reese is hiding in a burned out car surrounded by T-600s!

Overall a satisfying read that provides much needed backstory for the movie, which I cannot wait to see!

    I Also Recommend:

Makes you look forward to the movie.

This book is well written by a very well established Sci-Fi author. Zahn, who is probably best known to Sci-Fi geeks as the founder of the Star Wars expanded universe, having written the first trilogy of novels taking place after the original Star Wars films, has proven his worth once again.

Star Wars, as well as his other Sci-Fi books aside, this novel takes place after the war between machines and man began, as well as well after the last Terminator Film, Terminator: Rise of the Machines. And promises to take place immediately before the start of the new film, Terminator: Salvation. Small enclaves of humans exist in the war torn rubble of Los Angeles, and John Conner, the predestined saviour of man in the series, as fortold by his father Kyle, has began his leadership in a small band of resistance fighters in their fight against the machines. Kyle, who is just a boy, finds himself and one of the small bands of humans deep in L.A. in a perilous situation.

This book is well written, short and easy to read, as well as a must read for those who are planning on seeing the new film this week.
