Die Entwicklung des Stiftes Mainz steht in untrennbarem Zusammenhang mit der Entwicklung des Bistums, dessen weltliche Habseligkeiten ersteres zu verwalten, zu betreuen und bisweilen auch zu mehren hatte. So wurde das Bistum 780/1 zum Erzbistum erhoben und mit ihm das Stift zum Erzstift. Die Grundlage allen weltlichherrschaftlichen Handelns des Erzbischofs bildete zunächst „das reiche Kirchengut, über welches das Erzstift schon in karolingischer Zeit" in Mainz und seiner näheren Umgebung verfügte1. Das Vermögen fußte auf kirchlichem Zehnten, Eigenkirchen und Grundbesitz2. Eine weitere Voraussetzung für das nun folgende territoriale Handeln der Erzbischöfe bestand in der wahrscheinlich unter Bischof Wilhelm (954-968) erlangten Immunität des Mainzer Kirchenbesitzes. Diese machte eine Herauslösung aus zuvor bestehenden Besitzrechten erst möglich, wenn auch kaum anzunehmen ist, dass zu jener Zeit bereits nennenswerte Territorialkomplexe entstanden seien. Viel eher ist davon auszugehen, dass es sich um den für die Zeit üblichen Streubesitz handelte, der keineswegs ein regional homogenes Bild ergeben hätte3.
