Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez were far from the sole beneficiaries of 1999's "Latin Pop Explosion." New York-based Puerto Rican rap kingpin Fat Joe not only introduced a platinum-selling protégé in fellow Bronx compadre Big Punisher, but went gold himself for the first time in his career with his third LP, DON CARTAGENA. At times Joe's winning streak appears secure on the eponymous debut LP of his collective Terror Squad which features homies Cuban Link, Triple Seis, Prospect, and Armageddon in addition to Joe and Big Punisher. "Whatcha Gon Do?" is a thunderous string-laden Pun showcase that finds the 300-pound rap heavyweight in fine form, menacingly rhyming and singing threats at the opposition, while Joe's own...

"Whatcha Gon Do?" is a thunderous string-laden Pun showcase that finds the 300-pound rap heavyweight in fine form, menacingly rhyming and singing threats at the opposition, while Joe's own piano-driven solo spotlight, "Bring It On," is all the equal in intensity. Elsewhere, however, Joe and Pun's pals never quite step out from their mentors' formidable shadows, regularly rhyming in cadences and voices that flow fluidly, but sound too similar to fully distinguish themselves. Next explosion, Joe might do better to allow his Squad additional seasoning to fully strike fear into the hearts of competitors. Chairman Mao
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Terror Squad spends much of their eponymous debut trading in gangsta clichés -- it only seems like there's been a hundred songs called "Pass the Glock" -- but beneath those rehashed themes lay some clever rhymes and music. Fat Joe and Big Punisher lead the group, which contains such promising rappers as Prospect and Cuban Link. The two established rappers often take a back seat, letting the other four members showcase their talents. All six members are very talented and their skills are enhanced by the productions, which are not only funky but show some imagination. It would have been nice if there was a little more imagination behind the lyrics, but the record itself is a good, solid effort that's better than many of hardcore rap efforts in recent memory.
