A novel by Thomas Hardy, first published in 1891.
Though now considered an important work of English literature, the book received mixed reviews when it first appeared, in part because it challenged the sexual mores of Hardy's day.
Hardy's writing often illustrates the "ache of modernism", and this theme is notable in Tess, which, as one critic noted, portrays "the energy of traditional ways and the strength of the forces that are destroying them".

This was a wonderful example of classic literature. I enjoyed every page of it. However, there were a few typos. The transcription of this novel into a form accessible with the Nook was much better done than some I have purchased but not perfect.

    Bronte-esque

I found this book both riveting and tragic. Tess is a prime example of how much has not changed for women through the ages. Especially a woman of intellect and morals. I kept hopong for the best for the heroine, but society AND her choices are both to blame for her ending.
