Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Virginia Richardson, DNS, RN, CPNP (Indiana University School of Nursing)
Description: This book is designed for beginning students to help them study and learn more effectively and become "test wise." This is a second edition with new chapter on critical thinking, test taking techniques, and the use of computers in nursing education and evaluation.
Purpose: Content includes basic physiology and psychosocial needs which would be found in a fundamentals course. The book can also be used by PN students as they prepare for their national examination. Faculty can use the suggested strategies as they prepare examinations and design test taking workshops for student nurses.
Audience: The book meets the authors' objectives of providing test taking strategies as well as many exam questions with rationales for each answer.
Features: The book is easy to follow and read with good explanations and examples. The table of contents is inclusive and it is easy to locate content.
Assessment: This book is useful to beginning nursing students and I would recommend it to students with test taking problems. Students can use the book several times because of the number of sample questions that are included. Practice exams are categorized as to content in fundamental nursing courses such as hygiene and comfort needs, elimination needs, and oxygen needs. This makes it more relevant to beginning students.
