Tests and Measurements in Physical Education
Testing and measuring is by no means a recent innovation in the program of physical education. Hitchcock, at Amherst, starting in 1861, and Sargent, at Harvard, beginning in 1880, were pioneers in the use of anthropometric measurements as applied to a physical development program. Sargent was also instrumental, in common with a number of other physical educators of his time, in developing the widespread popularity of strength tests during the period from approximately 1880 until around 1900.
