As they make their way West, an unexpected, deep bond develops between Vanessa and Clayton—far more powerful than a mere friendship or his sense of duty to her. But Vanessa’s stepfather won’t let her go so easily. As Clayton and Vanessa place their faith in God and their trust in each other, will they find healing and hope for the future together?
"Shelley Gray is a wonderful storyteller, and A Texan’s Promise captured me from the first page. This endearing love story is so rich with detail, I felt like I was traveling alongside Vanessa and Clayton throughout their incredible journey. Clayton is the hero every woman dreams of, and I loved watching Vanessa grow from a scared girl into a strong woman. This is a wonderful start to this new series. Highly recommended." - Beth Wiseman Best-selling author of the Daughters of the Promise series
"Shelley Gray’s fans will enjoy riding along with her characters down a new trail of romance in A Texan’s Promise, the first in The Heart of a Hero series. Readers will be rooting for Clayton and Vanessa to find their way to a true and lasting love." - Ann H. Gabhart, author of The Outsider, Summer of Joy, and Angel Sister

Coulda been a nice story, but it is loaded with spreading the word, praising the lord, & pondering god's plan. Every move, thought, or decision that any character makes is a long drawn out diatribe about whether they think it's all about god's will. I found all the preaching & scripture to be way over the top, especially for a romance novel.

Story of a young girl abused by her step-father and rescued by a ranch hand. Leaving everything behind they escape to another state while being pursued. A tough cowboy can be tender, loving and patient while his beloved recovers from emotional and physical scars. His insecurities need time to heal, but in time a family is built. Characters weren't very strong. The story line had flaws in it. Timing of events wasn't believable. UGH! Non-Christian fiction puts this so called "Christian" romance to shame. I'm deleting it from my NOOK. I think that it was free, so no big loss!

A Texan's Promise by Shelley Gray is a delightful tale set in Texas in 1873. Shelley weaves a story about Vanessa Grant, a young woman who has suffered tremendously, after undergoing advances from her stepfather. Clayton Proffitt, foreman of the ranch, comes to her rescue.
Clayton chooses the honorable thing in taking care of Vanessa, and getting her away from her stepfather's evil clutches. But will he ever choose to love her or will he always just be honor bound?
I found A Texan's Promise to be a wonderfully written novel and highly recommend it.

I'm not really sure why I kept reading this book after I got so bored with it I kept falling asleep. It was so syrupy I thought I was going to gag, but then I suppose some readers love this style of writing. This story was not for me.

It was good read mostly, just a little heavy on the religion, so if you are not into that type of content probably is not for you. Otherwise, it was an alright story.

Totally enjoyable read. Multiple references to the Bible, which was truly revered at that time in our history.

This book was not quite what I expected. It is historical meets western, romantic meets religious. This book is filled with sweet romance, and packed full of Biblical references. Every other sentence has a reference to God, the Bible or Jesus. The two characters spend most of their time with inner doubts, wheras if they talked to each other honestly they would see they shared those doubts. Overall a nice, well developed book.
