Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
As early as 1519, Spanish explorers began settling in Texas. It was a rich land filled with open space begging for occupants. Eventually, the explorers encountered the native population from the Apache, Comanche, Caddo, and other Indian tribes. The French flag followed, then the Mexican flag, and finally the Republic of Texas was formed. During the turbulent years of the Civil War, Texas seceded from the United States to join the Confederacy. In all, Texas has served under six different flags. This explains the multi-cultural citizenry and trends that you find when you cross over the borders of Texas. It is the second largest state, which allows for the diversity to be spread out over 266,807 square miles and four different geographic regions. This book does a fine job of offering bits of information about all of the regions and its occupants. Extra resources, wonderful photographs, and easy to read text will make this a useful text in my classroom. It is part of the "It's My State" series. 2003, Benchmark Books

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Basic information about the state of Texas is presented in an accessible text with an attractive format. Topics required in most school reports about states are included. Brief descriptions of the state plant, flower, bird, tree, dish, and dance are followed by a discussion of geographic features including location, landscape, climate, wildlife, plants, and animals. A chapter about the history of the state includes information about the earliest peoples, the first explorers, the six flags of Texas, and cowboys. A timeline on a separate page summarizes important dates. The cultural diversity of the state is highlighted in the chapter about the people and what they do. The issue of undocumented immigration is explained. Famous people from Texas and tourist attractions are given individual sections. The capital city and the government, including how laws are made, are explained. Agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and technology are major components of the economy. Insets throughout contain "Quick Facts" and "In Their Own Words" (quotes from famous people). The state flag, seal, and song appear near the end of the book. Photographs (both historical and current), maps, and charts offer aids in understanding. Includes a bibliography and an index. A good reference source for upper elementary school students, this is part of the "It's My State" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
