The author of Trucker's Night Before Christmas and Ten Redneck Babies: A Southern Counting Book has another Texas tale to tell. Gather 'round and listen to the adventures of a frustrated cowboy and his stubborn steer, and how difficult it can be to get home for supper!

Old Texas cowboy Zeke is looking forward to a hot bowl of chili, but to get it, he must get his newly purchased steer into the corral. By enlisting the help of a collie, a mesquite stick, a campfire, a javelina, a burro, a prickly pear cactus, an armadillo, a pretty gal, and a mockingbird, he finally gets his dinner-but not without the possibility of the antics starting all over again!

Told in the author's inimitable native Texan voice, this humorous story makes for great read-aloud fun. The book is full of colorful vocabulary reflecting the Southwest region and encourages children to follow along with its repetition of objects, animals, and actions.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
With lyrical language, David Davis brings the wit and wisdom of his native Texas to the page of a picture book that is destined to enchant readers far past the Southwest region of the United States. In the spirit of a tall tale, Texas cowboy Zeke wants a cup of chili and needs the help of a steer, a mesquite stick, a javelin, a burrito, a prickly pear cactus, an armadillo, a pretty cowgirl, and a mockingbird to finally get his dinner. After a long string of events, Zeke finally gets that bowl of chili—and readers of all ages will laugh along the way of his many escapades. Alan Fearl Stacy's humorous illustrations bring readers to the landscape of Texas, where characters and stories become larger-than-life. David Davis has once again touched magic and given readers a bit of Texas folklore and flavor that is beautifully integrated with Alan Stacy's lively drawings. 2006, Pelican Publishing Company, Ages 5 up.

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3-A gentle version of "The Old Woman and Her Pig," set in Texas. Old Zeke buys an ornery longhorn steer that balks at being corralled, and the frustrated cowboy "won't get home for chili" until the job is done. When he requests help from a collie and is refused, he asks a mesquite stick to poke the dog, and so it goes. Davis features a tenderhearted, politically correct protagonist. Zeke mildly presents a bluebonnet flower to a mockingbird that sings to a lovely cowgirl, who kisses a cowboy, who chases an armadillo, and so on, until the steer is finally put away. The straightforward language rolls off the storyteller's tongue, but the narrative suffers from being scrunched up in paragraphs that get longer and longer. The tightly arranged text blocks look wrong on spreads that depict the open Texas landscape. Still, the colorful cartoon illustrations cleverly convey the action and are filled with humor. The keen combination of art and story is further enhanced by endpapers that map out the events in simple line drawings that will encourage retellings. Altogether, this softer interpretation of the folktale will fit in with current sensibilities.-Nancy Call, Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Aptos, CA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
