More About This Textbook
Overview
The first of its kind, this book reflects progress in a too-little explored corner of psychiatry to show that gender plays an integral role in mental health issues for men. Textbook of Men's Mental Health provides clinicians with the information they need for understanding how certain disorders manifest differently in men -- and for recognizing how treatment responses in men differ from those in women.
With contributions by today's experts in men's mental health, this work gathers the latest research about men's psychiatric issues, from the difficulties in diagnosing male depression to interventions for body image disorders. First addressing developmental issues specific to childhood, adolescence, and old age, the text then presents treatment options for an array of problems, from substance abuse to sexual disorders to posttraumatic stress disorder. This volume then addresses psychosocial issues as they apply uniquely to men, such as fathering, marriage, aggression -- even the challenge of overcoming the stigma of mental health treatment. The evidence-based coverage is complemented by case vignettes, key points, practice guidelines, and an extensive reference list for each chapter.

From The Critics
Reviewer: Steven T. Herron, MD(University of Arizona Health Sciences Center)Description: Written as an introduction to mental health issues regarding men, this book highlights differences and similarities between men and women in the areas of clinical presentation and treatment of psychiatric disorders.
Purpose: Though vast amounts of information about mental health issues results from research about men, there is significantly less known regarding how being male affects the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders. This book attempts to identify these issues for providers and offers practical guidelines for treatment.
Audience: Targeted mainly for mental health providers, this book may also be useful for individuals interested in the specific differences between mental health issues in men and women.
Features: Essentially divided into three sections — developmental issues, diagnostic and treatment issues, and sociocultural issues — this book uses case examples, clinical language, and clinical terminology to illustrate relevant information regarding men's mental health problems. Each chapter ends with key points and practice guidelines sections to condense the vital material into digestible bites for the reader.
Assessment: Because this book is rather unique, there are relatively few books with which to compare it. It is based on a premise receiving little attention until recently (mostly thanks to the recent explosion of interest in women's mental health issues), which is that men and women express differences in how their mental conditions present, and how these diseases are treated. Much of the data is fascinating, including the chapters regarding men and fatherhood, men and marriage, and the male body image and muscularity. It is a worthwhile read for anyone practicing psychiatry or psychology.
