Editorial Reviews
Franz Winklhofer
The two volume textbook on nephrology covers anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the kidney and urinary tract, hypertension, dialysis and renal transplantation. This is the third edition of this text, and replaces the prior edition from 1989. The editors' purpose is to provide a comprehensive text of nephrology which is easy to read and useful in the care of patients. This is a needed reference text, especially as the scope of nephrology expands. The authors do a fairly effective job of meeting their objectives. It is well written and without significant omissions. The authors state in their preface that the targeted audience is the physician learning the art and science of renal medicine. The contributors are credible, well-respected authorities in their disciplines. The illustrations, though not particularly attractive, are adequate and helpful. The references are largely current, and both the tables of contents and index are adequate. The book is a simply designed, gray two volume set. One helpful feature is a section with plates illustrating renal histology. This text would be a useful, valuable edition to either a library or an individual's personal collection. It is indeed a comprehensive treatise and the references are largely recent, the majority cited having been published since the previous 1989 text. The quality of this text and the changes in nephrology since the prior edition justify purchasing the 1995 edition.Booknews
;st The second edition (1989), entitled Textbook of Nephrology, is cited in Brandon-Hill. A textbook that presents a systematic, comprehensive, and concise account of the current knowledge of nephrology. In 105 chapters, contributors (some 100 new to this edition) provide the state of the art and their personal experience in the physiology of the kidney, and in the pathophysiology, pathology, clinical features, diagnosis, prognosis, and management of a wide array of disorders related to the general scope of nephrology.
