More than 40 leading authorities present a comprehensive, clear approach to the care of neurological disease and injury—from the emergency room and ICU through the operating room and post-surgical period. They discuss everything from general issues—such as cardiac care, fluids and electrolytes, nutrition, and monitoring—to specfic conditions and complications including elevated intracranial pressure, seizures, and altered mental states. Surgical chapters review problem issues from the surgeon's point of view, providing the ultimate practitioner's perspective for learning and observation.
  • Covers all monitoring, imaging, and surgical modalities.
  • Reviews neuroanatomy and neurophysiology.
  • Offers a detailed review of radiologic anatomy through abundant use of plain film, CT and MR scanning techniques.
  • Examines the neurological problems most frequently encountered in intensive care.
  • Describes the various types of neurosurgery.
  • Presents detailed discussions of endovascular interventions.
  • Provides evidence-based data when available.
  • Includes algorithms to facilitate decision making and key points in each chapter.
  • Alerts the reader to problems that can arise in even the most well-performed procedure.

From The Critics
Reviewer: David J. Dries, MD (University of Minnesota Medical School)
Description: This is a comprehensive textbook of critical care for neurologic problems.
Purpose: The book includes reviews of neurophysiology, neuroanatomy and pertinent radiology concerns.
Audience: Neurosurgeons, neurologists, intensivists, and senior trainees in these disciplines are an appropriate audience for this work. The editors and authors originate at multiple centers throughout the United States. A significant proportion of authorship is represented by the University of Florida at Gainesville. Trainees in neurological surgery have also contributed to this work.
Features: The 32 chapters are organized into four sections. Chapters are organized into three sections beginning with an extensive introduction to neuroanatomy, imaging, neurophysiology, and general clinical principles. A second section reviews organ system support in neurologic problems including cardiac management, the airway, fluid and electrolytes, nutrition, and monitoring. Concluding chapters describe traumatic brain injury, rehabilitation, and ethics. Chapters are clearly written with an abundant reference list. References date to within three years of publication and represent primary work. A large number of high quality line drawings are provided. Black-and-white illustrations are included in several of the chapters. Unfortunately, reproductions of radiographs and photographs of anatomic preparations have inconsistent quality. A lengthy table of contents groups chapters by authorship and section while the index provides citations for figures and tables.
Assessment: This is the most detailed work yet devoted to an extremely important subject. Succeeding editions will need to improve illustration quality, consistent reference format and consider chapter reorganization among the general groupings. For example, trauma and multiple organ failure are described in two different chapters with separate locations. Nonetheless, this is a leading contemporary reference in this field and warrants inclusion on the shelf of concerned practitioners.
