Overview

"Prepared by leading experts in the field, Textbook of Orthopaedics, Trauma and Rheumatology has been developed with the aim of providing medical students with a current and comprehensive guide to the practical management of common musculoskeletal conditions." "Fully illustrated throughout, the book offers a common approach to history taking and physical examination, and relevant anatomy, highlighting the reasons for the different approaches within each specialty as required. The first part of the book addresses the core topics relating to each discipline and provides useful summary boxes to outline the main points, including aetiology, pathology, epidemiology, clinical features, investigations, management and prognosis." The book also presents 100 clinical cases designed to test the reader's problem-solving skills in managing patients faced in every-day practice, as well as a full range of MCQs on STUDENT CONSULT - the learning tool designed specifically for medical students. Written primarily for medical students, this learning package is also ideal for primary care physicians, nurse specialists and other members of the multidisciplinary team dealing with musculoskeletal problems.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Edward Abraham, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This basic book deals with the management of patients with musculoskeletal disorders.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide medical students with a comprehensive guide to orthopedic, trauma, and rheumatology medicine.
Audience: The audience is primarily medical students. Primary care physicians and allied professionals are a secondary audience.
Features: The first of the book's two sections includes overviews of the three disciplines. The second section includes 100 clinical cases of common diagnoses that test students' problem solving skills with questions and answers. Access to an online student consult learning tool is available at no extra charge. The book is well illustrated and summary boxes highlight the important points, covering the etiology, epidemiology, clinical features, diagnostic tests, and clinical management of each disorder.
Assessment: This book, edited by four physicians from the U.K., is the best comprehensive work I have seen on the musculoskeletal system for medical students. A similar U.S. book is Musculoskeletal Medicine, Bernstein et al. (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2003). There has been a drive by the AAOS to unify the teaching of the musculoskeletal system to medical students. I highly recommend the U.K. book to all medical students, junior residents, and primary care physicians.
