Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Bradley W Ornstein, M.D.(Washington University Medical Center)
Description: The sixth edition of this book continues to provide comprehensive yet succinct information on the vast array of diseases confronted in pediatric rheumatology. Since the publication of the previous edition in 2005, there have been numerous advances in the treatment and understanding of many of these diseases, and the new edition brings this authoritative book up to speed.
Purpose: The book successfully "provide[s] comprehensive information regarding the rheumatic diseases of childhood" and "reflect[s] the clinical science of pediatric rheumatology, its codification as a distinct specialty, and the gratifying maturity that it has achieved."
Audience: It is geared towards specialists in pediatric rheumatology, adult rheumatologists who also care for children, or pediatricians seeking an authoritative book on the subject.
Features: Written by international experts in the field, the book begins with a description of joint structure/function, basic immunology, and therapeutics before moving into coherent reviews of the autoimmune, autoinflammatory, and other musculoskeletal diseases seen by pediatric rheumatologists. It also includes access to an online version of the book that contains additional figures and an exhaustive reference list.
Assessment: This remains the gold-standard reference in pediatric rheumatology and is a must-have for any physician caring for children with rheumatic diseases. This much-anticipated revision continues to provide a comprehensive and coherent review of the field. In addition to more up-to-date information on biologics, classification schemes, and disease pathophysiology, this edition also includes updates such as color figures, tables, and images in the book as well as access to an online version with additional information.
From the Publisher
"The book is well written by several of the recognised experts in the world of paediatric rheumatology. As every good textbook should, it starts with a basic introduction to the subject then works its way around the underlying anatomical and immunological concepts required to understand the disease processes…Overall the Textbook of Paediatric Rheumatology will retain its place as the standard for its subject. " Dr. Simon Fountain-Polley - Review of 5th edition

This is the standard reference in the field of pediatric rheumatology. It offers outstanding comprehensive coverage of the diagnosis and treatment of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, juvenile dermatomyositis, and related diseases. It is intended as a definitive reference on pediatric rheumatology. The audience for the book includes pediatricians, rheumatologists, and pediatric rheumatologists. In its 15 chapters, the book covers etiology and pathogenesis, drug therapy, musculoskeletal pain syndromes, skeletal malignancies, and primary bone and connective tissue diseases. It is profusely illustrated with photographs, imaging studies, charts, and other material. The references are recent and complete. This text offers thorough, reliable information in a definitive fashion for any physicians involved in caring for children who have or might have rheumatologic diseases. The presentation of such diseases is protean, diagnosis often takes time, and management can be complex. This volume address these issues thoroughly. For example, the distinction between diagnostic criteria and classification of pediatric rheumatologic diseases is lucidly presented. Immunodeficiency diseases are now well covered. This third edition continues the tradition of expansion and improvement over previous editions. Many new illustrations have been added, the text has been enriched in many areas, with even more thorough discussions of difficult diagnostic and therapeutic situations. The scientific bases of the diseases are well detailed with recent findings, such as HLA association seen in children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. As more unifying concepts emerge from currentbasic research, the results will no doubt be incorporated into future editions. The authors are to be commended for refining an already excellent text.
