Editorial Reviews

Avinash Balkissoon
This multiauthored British textbook was first published in 1969, and the fifth edition appeared 1992. There are over 1600 pages in its two volumes, and approximately 4500 illustrations. The sections are system based and all modalities of imaging are included in each section. The purpose is clearly to provide the radiology student with a sound background in and understanding of radiology, in as concise a fashion as possible. This objective has been met, but with today's ever-increasing demand on the radiology resident for more in-depth knowledge, a single though well written text cannot stand alone as a source of information and must be supplemented by journals and more specialized texts in each subsection. This text does not provide sufficient detail to be used as a reference by the practicing radiologist. It is clearly and concisely written with a fairly uniform style. The seven sections are well organized by system, except for section six, which serves to fill in the gaps with topics on ENT, eyes, teeth, and soft tissues. Added enhancements from the previous edition include useful sections on color Doppler and MR of soft tissues. The vast majority of images are of good quality. However, in some sections, particularly in chest and bone, the plain radiograph reproduction lacks clarity. In the neuroradiology section some of the CT images are old and the addition of more MR images would be useful. This is a well-written textbook of radiology that has been a standard in its field for almost 30 years. The text has been suitably updated since the last edition and the authors should be commended on the choice of subject matter and range of coverage. This text compares favorablywith similar all-encompassing texts of imaging.
