Overview

The Textbook of the Autoimmune Diseases is the definitive reference work about the mechanisms autoimmune diseases employ against the body and the conditions in which they thrive. Whether it's where and how autoimmune diseases disable organs from functioning, or the first symptoms of disease, this book blends both the clinical and the scientific to explain autoimmune diseases' phenomena. The only source for information on heavy metals' and silicone implants' effects on autoimmunity, this book compiles contributions from world-renowned faculty to cut across all fields of medicine, from surgery to internal medicine.

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Wayne M. Yokoyama, MD (Washington University Medical Center)
Description: This book is focused on the basic science and clinical aspects of autoimmune diseases.
Purpose: The editors attempt to unite scientific disciplines and diverse specialties by covering the extremely diverse topic of autoimmunity. This is a worthy objective since most other textbooks are focused on only a subset of these disciplines or specialties. The editors have succeeded and even cover topics such as experimental animal models of autoimmunity.
Audience: This is an authoritative textbook aimed at both the physician and scientist. The editors have used their experience with the "bench to bedside" approach at Rockefeller University to guide the approach to their subject.
Features: The entire field of autoimmunity is covered from basic aspects of immunology to science behind autoimmune phenomena (such as autoantibodies) to organ and systemic autoimmune diseases crossing the many different medical specialties and experimental models. This comprehensive coverage in a single textbook is difficult to do but the editors have nicely succeeded despite the large number of experts who wrote the chapters. While the depth of individual chapters is not as detailed as in other texts, the broad coverage is unparalleled.
Assessment: In this comprehensive textbook the editors cover the entire field of autoimmunity crossing a diversity of topics from basic immunology to organ and systemic autoimmune disorders and experimental models. It will be extremely useful to any student of any aspect of autoimmunity because topics that are otherwise found in different areas of science or medicine are now discussed in one textbook.
