Editorial Reviews

C. W. Smith
This is an outstanding, comprehensive textbook on internal medicine in the dog and cat. With two editors and 225 contributors representing both academia and private practice and a text that includes 184 chapters and 1996 pages, this revision offers a tremendous wealth of experience and information in a very pleasant format. This fifth edition is entirely rewritten and revised to accommodate clinical advances and developments since the 1995 edition. The outline of the previous edition is followed, but chapters in clinical manifestation of diseases, infectious diseases, nutrition, and cancer are expanded, and new features include a chapter on acupuncture, alternative therapies, and holistic medicine, and a client information series. These changes enhance the value of the book to practitioners. The editors target veterinary students and practitioners. Practitioners at all levels -- interns, residents, and seasoned clinicians -- will find this textbook a valuable addition to their library. Also, board certified veterinarians in disciplines other than internal medicine will find this textbook very valuable. The two volumes of this textbook are divided into 16 sections and three appendixes. The first section is a brief description of the approach to medical problems in a logical manner. Algorithms in each chapter aid practitioners in their decision-making process. Nutrition and its relationship to developmental skeletal, urinary, cardiac, and gastrointestinal diseases is dealt with in the second section. In the third section, drugs, fluid, electrolyte, and blood transfusion therapy are discussed, and infectious diseases are discussed in the fourth section. In Section Five, tumorbiology, tumor types, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy are discussed. The different systems are covered in Sections Six through 16, and many algorithms, tables, illustrations, and references are included. One appendix contains a client information series, valuable one-page reports that can be copied and given to clients. The other two appendixes contain information on congenital defects of the cat and dog. Even the inside of the book cover contains valuable information on abnormal laboratory findings, conditions associated with hematologic change, and urinalysis abnormalities. This edition is outstanding, comprehensive, and current. The editors and contributors continue to provide quality information as they have for the past 25 years. For the reader who wants an internal medicine textbook with depth for understanding pathophysiology, with quality tables, illustrations, algorithms, and references, and with consistently pleasant and attractive chapters, this textbook is excellent and in a class all its own.

The new, fourth edition of this book (the last edition was published in 1989) provides information concerning all aspects of the etiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of clinical problems in small companion animals (dogs and cats). The book provides an exhaustive resource regarding veterinary internal medicine in small companion animals. The book is probably the most important and authoritative source of information about small animal disease, diagnosis, and treatment. The objectives of the book are completely fulfilled. The book is intended to be a resource for veterinary medical students and veterinarians practicing small animal medicine. The editors and contributors are among the most knowledgeable people in the field and are, therefore, very credible. The book contains high quality and extremely pertinent illustrations and numerous tables, diagnostic algorithms, and photographs. The book is organized into sections according to clinical sign or organ system, making it easy to find information. The table of contents and index are excellent and the book contains numerous, recent references. This is a high quality book that is very useful for veterinary students and small animal practitioners. The book provides probably the single best resource available concerning small animal veterinary internal medicine. All veterinary medical libraries and individuals who practice small animal medicine should own this book. This new edition certainly offers enough new information to warrant replacing the previous edition.
