Overview

An appropriately titled album, Tha Carter II builds on the Lil Wayne of the first Carter, the Lil Wayne who was not only cocky, but also truly confident, confident enough to loosen up his rhymes and create a winning mixture of slick baller posturing and slippery flippancy. If the first Carter found him somewhere between a crazed Silkk the Shocker and a thuggish Devin the Dude, the excellent follow-up finds him more toward the latter. Take "Money on My Mind," a track that covers the usual "get money" territory but this time with scatological whimsy and off-the-wall rhymes that would make Tracy Morgan proud. This uninhibited style is also the reason the many hookless, freestyle-ish tracks work, and while these hardcore, mixtape-sounding numbers may alienate those who don't appreciate dirty street music, they balance the slicker club singles. Recalling the gutter hits of the Hot Boys -- the crew where Lil Wayne spent his teen years -- the stomping "Fireman" was rightfully lighting up the request lines at the album's release, but the rest of the radio-worthy polish -- "Grown Man," "Hustler Music," and "Get Over" -- is much more soulful, with smooth R&B in its heart rather than tacked-on to land it on the play list. For longtime fans of Lil Wayne or the Cash Money label, the absence of regular producer Mannie Fresh is worth noting, but the Heatmakerz along with Tmix & Batman offer plenty of brilliant grime and glitter while two newcomers deliver the curveballs. Producer Yonny loops a reggae bounce and makes the smoking song "Mo Fire" drip out of the speakers like the dankest sticky-icky while Thicke -- as in Alan Thicke's son -- reprises his slinkiest number from his overlooked 2003 album Beautiful World for "Shooter," arguably the most adventurous and stylish Lil Wayne song yet. Lyrical triumphs like the epic "Tha Mobb" and the pimp-hand-showing "Receipt" seal the deal, leaving only the short, ignorable skits and the black-on-red printing in the liner notes to complain about (the latter is hell on the eyeballs). The sturdy Carter II caps off a year when the man was appointed president of Cash Money by founders Birdman and Ronald "Slim" Williams, then watched his 17th Ward, New Orleans, neighborhood destroyed by hurricane Katrina -- something bitterly touched upon during "Feel Me"'s FEMA dis, but most likely too late for press time for most tracks. The well-rounded, risk-taking, but true-to-its-roots album suggests he can weather the highs and lows like a champion and that Birdman and Slim knew something everyone else didn't when they bet the farm on the formerly "raw talent," now "fully formed" Lil Wayne.

Lil' Wayne got a good look with his album. It should be a classic, reason being Weezy is a good rapper, hard, and real, with his own too cool swagger and artillery of jazz based beats at his disposal, the beats aren't outstanding, but they're not poor. I look foward to more from a don of the ARCH, or da LOU.

On some Real Ish he is so overated it's rediculous. Everytime I aked someone what does he talk about and what does it mean No 1 can eva give me a straight answer he probably don't know either. After Carter 1 people really started hypin him up. U can't b da best after jus 1 good LP. Exspecially when u gotta go threw real MC's like Mos Def Jada Talib Eminem jus 2 throw a few out there. No your role first then act accordingly. And no I'm not hatin eitha jus keepin it 100.

As many songs that are on this album, 20 in all, this is probably the project with the most wasted songs I ever heard. By that I mean, some of the production on the beats were good, but Lil Wayne's lyrics are worthless. Either he is talking about being the greatest or jumping on the band wagon of Jay-Z and Baby. The best song on his album isn't even his song originally. He took the whole Thicke song "oh shooter" and just rapped some bull over it. Probably the only song I will give him credit for is "Grown Man," which is the only song worth listening to for lyrics and the beat. The media needs to form there own opinions instead of praising these untalented acts like Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy. I mean for real, the most played song on the charts is "Laffy Taffy," which isn't even music just random words and a wack beat thrown together by some dudes who know somebody in the industry. I'm not hating on Southern rap either, because Outkast is one of the greatest groups in music. Leave the music to REAL musicians, not some dudes who only got their jobs because they knew somebody and have nothing better to do with their lives.

Lil Wayne is the best rapper out there right now. What u talkin about? He isn't over-rated at all. If anything he is under-rated. You don't see him all over commercials and TV alot of rappers who get too much credit like Diddy, Jay-Z and etc. He is still under the radar and has the best lyrics out there and best delivery. All of his cd's are good too. All the way thru, not just a few songs here and there. Don't comment on something when you don't know what you're talkin about.

Yo I know y'all wonderin how did he get this CD that early but I don't have it yet my friend let me listen me listen to it cause he got it right now. I'm goin to say this Lil' Wayne is the best out of Cash Money. After all it's the Carter. Tha Carter 2 is a album that I never heard before it's different than his others I know it supposed to but he got those beats and lyrics hot as don't know what. Get this CD if you can it's tight.
