Barnes & Noble - Matt Diehl
Snoop Dogg was a central figure in the notorious East Coast-West Coast rap wars of yesteryear, representing the "Wesside!" with gusto. So why is he calling his new supergroup Tha Eastsidaz? Turns out the Dogg-ster's from the east side of Long Beach. Who knew? But semantics aside, this is Snoop's hottest release in years. While the trio Snoop, hip-hop vet Tray Deee, and new jack Goldie Loc travels the usual gangsta terrain, from gang-banging to ho-slapping to glorified gat-totin', the boyz do show their kinder, gentler side on cuts like "Be Thankful." Snoop Dogg was a central figure in the notorious East Coast-West Coast rap wars of yesteryear, representing the "Wesside!" with gusto. So why is he calling his new supergroup Tha Eastsidaz? Turns out the Dogg-ster's from the east side of Long Beach. Who knew? But semantics aside, this is Snoop's hottest release in years. While the trio Snoop, hip-hop vet Tray Deee, and new jack Goldie Loc travels the usual gangsta terrain, from gang-banging to ho-slapping to glorified gat-totin', the boyz do show their kinder, gentler side on cuts like "Be Thankful." Through and through, this is high-grade Cali hip-hop, squelchily bouncing like a drop-top low rider pumped up with powerful hydraulics. "Now We Lay 'em Down," for example, works an irresistible Gap Band-style synth hook that pleases the ear, then layers it with swirling P-Funk-style harmonies that command your ass to follow. Snoop's rhyme flow sounds more relaxed and exuberant than it has on his recent solo albums and collaborations with Dr. Dre. And with guest appearances by the cream of West Coast B-boys like Xzibit, Kurupt, Nate Dogg, Jayo Felony, Rappin' 4-Tay, and Warren G, Tha Eastsidaz prove that it's still nothin' but a G-funk thang.
All Music Guide - Matt Conaway
Snoop Dogg has always been remarkably intuitive when it comes to selecting his business associates. After all, he has had the good fortune of being mentored by arguably the industry's best producer Dr. Dre and its shrewdest businessman Master P. Now that Snoop's name has become synonymous with platinum plaques, the next logical step in his evolution was to do some mentoring of his own. Snoop's first entrepreneurial undertaking is the debut from fellow LBC mashers Tha Eastsidaz Tray Dee and Goldie Loc. While the group's chemistry flourishes on the spirited lead single "G'd Up," Snoop often overshadows his protégés by being predominantly featured on most of the LP's cuts. Also, the overwhelming abundance of guests Dr. Dre, Xzibit, Kurupt, Warren G, and Nate Dogg precludes the Eastsidaz from achieving any lasting unit cohesion, often making the duo seem like visitors on their own debut.

    West Coast spittin'

Tha Eastsidaz are like the westcoast MOP. They wanna smack you up and take over your block for the fun of it. These guy makes some bangin' songs. Their albums are better than what Snoop has to offer these days.
