Overview

Thabo Mbeki has devoted his life to the people of South Africa, first as a courageous fighter against apartheid and then as president of his beloved nation, helping to heal the wounds caused by decades of oppression. His success is even more astounding in light of the seemingly insurmountable obstacles he encountered early in life. His activist father spent many years in prison because of his political beliefs. Close relatives disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again. And Mbeki himself was forced to live in exile for nearly 30 years. What gave him the strength and determination to continue his struggle? How did the little boy from a small village go on to become South Africa's president? This revealing new biography answers these questions and more, exploring the life and accomplishments of this remarkable world leader.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leila Toledo
The events that led to apartheid in South Africa began in 1652 when the Dutch established their first permanent site there. During the ensuing years the Dutch, British, South African natives and the Boers were in constant conflict over the land and resources. According to the author, apartheid started around the time of Mbeki's birth in 1942. In spite of this his family stressed the importance of their children getting an education and being active politically. To this end, over the years, he became involved in the ANC (African National Congress) and maintained his family tradition of being active politically. He has continued to work within their framework throughout all of his adult life. This commitment eventually led to his being named by Nelson Mandela as deputy president of South Africa. Following Mandela's presidency of South Africa, Mbeki was elected president. Although he has been praised for his leadership and commitment to South Africa, his views on the causes and treatment of HIV/AIDS have led to worldwide criticism. His opposition to AIDS drugs has put the blame for thousands of deaths on him. Current news shows that Mr. Jacob Zuma's supporters have forced Mr. Mbeki out as South Africa's president. The question now is what person will step into the leadership role and whether a competitive democracy will survive. A glossary at the end of the book would be helpful. This is part of the "Modern World Leaders" series. Reviewer: Leila Toledo
