Thalia [2003]

Editorial Reviews

Mexico's soap-opera sensation Thalia makes a long-awaited introduction to the U.S. with an English-language debut that's informed by dozens of past hits in the Spanish-speaking world and beyond. Produced by husband Tommy Mottola, who was responsible for Mariah Carey's breakout success, Thalia is certain to make waves. Look out, Shakira!

All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
Thalía's string of Latin albums were calculated and executed for maximum appeal -- 2000's Arrasando was, after all, named after a popular Mexican soap opera. While the sounds were predictable, they were also immediately danceable, and smartly showcased the delectable Thalía herself. Given all of this, it's not surprising that the Latin superstar's English-language debut is equally fine-tuned. Before it becomes a Spanish-language album in its second half, Thalía runs artfully through the styles that have dominated the urban club/dance scene at least since the late '90s. Thalía trades lines Ashanti-style with Fat Joe on "I Want You" which also cops the hook of the late Big Punisher's classic -- and better -- single "Still Not a Player". She sells the positive-thinking vibe of the dancefloor-ready "Don't Look Back," but the song was much better as Kylie Minogue's "Love at First Sight." Beginning to see a pattern? It's true that with music such as this, the overall image of an artist -- stylization in both sound and sight -- is more marketable than breaking new ground. Thalía understands this from her Latin work. But from its bland photography, which dilutes her inherent diva-ness in favor of a generic read: Americanized sexy pop star layout, to tracks like "Misbehavin'" and "What's It Gonna Be Boy?," Thalía's official U.S. debut is a sleepwalking affair that lumps her into the throng of performers hoping to steal a little bit of J.Lo's bling-bling. It's unfortunate that Thalía's talent is misdirected into sound-alike territory, since she sounds so strong on the stirring "Closer to You" and "Save the Day" -- two surging dance ballads that suggest the mature sound of Des'Ree. It can be said that the songs are just another style Thalía is trying on; however, it's obvious in her expressive vocal that this is where she belongs, which is more than can be said for her tepid TRL duet with Fat Joe. The album is doubly disappointing, since its second half consists mostly of Spanish-language versions of the singles in its first half. Thalía was designed to show America what Mexico and the world have known for years about the artist. Unfortunately, it never focuses long enough on one thing to allow its star to truly emerge.

    THALIA IS DEFINITELY THE BEST!

Even though some people compare Thalia with Jennifer Lopez, I don't think they have anything to do with each other. Thalia has her own style and J-Lo has her own style and they're both great singers, but I have to admit that Thalia has been triumphing all around the world way vefore J-Lo. This album shows the Thalia everyone knows. The Thalia that likes to play around with many different kinds of music styles and sounds. In my opinion, all the songs are great in this album. The first single "I Want You" featuring Fat Joe has been one of the best songs in 2003. This album has been very successful. Other other great songs in this album are "Misbehavin'", "Don't Look Back", "What's it gonna be boy?", and "Another Girl". All of the songs in this album have great lyrics and very good messages in them. I totally recommend it. Thalia is the best Mexican singer and I don't know why many people compare her with Paulina Rubio. I mean, Thalia has been internationally known since 1995 when she released her "En Extasis" album. Back in 1995 she was triumphing with "En Extasis" as well as with her soap operas, while Paulina Rubio was failing with her albums and many critics thought that she was a futureless artist. It wasn't until she release her album "Paulina" in 2000 that she became internationally known. And that has been her best album because her 2002 album "Border Girl" was considered the worst latin album of 2002 and her most recent "Pau-Latina" album hasn't sold as many copies and hasn't been as successful. Anyway. I definitely recommend everyone on buying this "Thalia" album. I also heard that Thalia wants to start recording her second English album by the end of this year. Keep triumphing Thalia! Remember that your the BEST!!!!!

    who's can do it better????

i think that it was a interesting work, we have to be more flexible at time of doing any comments about artists, I think that we can confuse the melody of "I want you" with Jlo style but her voice is better. I would say she has to improve herself with her own style and would rock USA. She is a great singer and can do it better!!!!! keep on it!!!!

    In A Word: Disappointing

I have been a huge Thalia supporter since I heard the song for "Marimar" (one of her early Soap Operas), and always purchase any album she releases, but I was almost sorry I purchased this one. Since "Arrasando" and "Con Banda",both of which were excellent, her work has been falling down hill. Not reccomended for a new Thalia fan.

    The worst crossover ever heard!!!!

She is a J.Lo fake. Poor Thalia, Zero Original, best she can do is keep singing in mottola´s bath!!!! Where are Shakira and Paulina Rubio? They offered something new!!!!

Thalia resemlbing Mariah Carey? u crazy! lol

As for Taliah resembling Mariah Cary theres no comparison with looks and class. Thalia has her originality of the latin sound in music and plus is very intelligent in marrying Tony. Talk about a strong supportive backbone in the music industry with it's ups and downs. And talk about all the money. Yeah I do agree some songs do get boring but hey, anything for fame right? Anyways I've seen how Thalia started out in spanish soaps and the beautiful latin beat making you wanna dance. I´m sorry but Mariah doesn´t have that. She just has that annoing voice and no thalia is´t a copycat she just follows her intuition on what´ll make her more popular and more money.

This Album is great for her first English one.

I hate it when People diss or talk about Artist. I'd like to see them turn into a star like Thalia did. This album is good since Thalia is mexican and English isn't her primary language of course she's not going to sound perfect. I don't think she's trying to copy anyone. Especially JLo. Jlo would never sing Tu Y Yo in english. Thatd be funny. But overall it's a good album.

    Thalia Rocks

I listen to the Latin version and I cannot find anything wrong with the entire album. I may not understand the words, but it is the voice and music I really like.

What is this a copy of Mariah carey.

Thalia looks exacly the same as Mariah Carey both with brown curled hair in the early 1990´s now she have the same blond big hair like Mariah, she dresses like her and she is married to her EX-Husband TOMMY MOTTOLA,Thalia is a copycat of Mariah and the music of Thalia´s is well Mariah Carey sounding songs listen to the new single I Wan´t You With FatJoe a similar hip-hoptune Mariah does. But Mariah is just much better singer than Thalia but Thalia has a similar voice like Mariah and another thing Thalia also writes her materials but somehow i think Tommy is making her sound and be MARIAH CAREY. This album isn´t good or bad it´s in between and i feel sorry for Thalia because if Tommy is making her a clone of his ex wife Mariah and that isn´t right Thalia sould make her own persona instead to be a Mariah clone.

    Copy cat

Awful! 1/2 a star if any. Is she trying to be J Lo? Because she is sounding just like her, plus this isn't her style at all!! Lately she has been copying everyone, first Shakira & now this? Please!!!
