Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This funny and energetic guidebook for the recently (or repeatedly) fired from entrepreneur and comedian Martini and journalist Reed begins with a sympathetic but no-nonsense plan for picking yourself up after you’ve lost a job, and moves swiftly into the brainstorming and planning necessary to start the next—and more satisfying—career. Readers are challenged to answer the all-important question “What are you passionate about?” and strategize from there with an eye to becoming a self-employed independent contractor. Martini and Reed investigate such potential growth markets as green industries and the Gen Y market as well as the new outcropping of nontraditional jobs for women. Advice on finding community and places to get help and a plethora of resources elevate this cheerful, encouraging book into an invaluable resource. (Mar.)
From The Critics
For readers who have lost their jobs, are thinking about venturing forth as freelancers or consultants, or are searching for a new career, this is an invigorating and very helpful book. Martini is actually a stand-up comedian—"and an expert on being fired"—while Reed is a veteran freelance journalist. Their book is clear, enthusiastic, and, most importantly, loaded with direct, uncluttered advice with tons of specifics. A resource guide in the back lists almost 30 pages' worth of web sites and some print materials, corresponding to the chapter topics, which range from how to develop a support network and how to tune into Gen Y job networking to specifics on global, artistic, and green industries, among others. A great choice for most job hunters.—Margaret Heilbrun, Library Journal

Martini and Reed Get the Ideas Flowing

I recently lost my job and am thinking about making a career change. In fact, I'd like to open a business, I just am not sure what. This is a must read for anyone who wants ideas about what to do with themselves after they've been let go.

In fact, perhaps you still have a job but you dread going to work everyday. This is a great book to spark the neurons and get you considering a different path complete with weblinks and resources on how to get started.

    more from this reviewer

Out of work? Read this book

Very timely guide to helping someone out of work -- fired, layed off, etc. -- back into the workforce. Written empathetically, with a sense of humor. Advice comes across as extemely sensible. Information on key job trends also very helpful although authors will need to publish future editions with these chapters updated every 18 months (so next version: no later than beginning of 2012). A great companion piece to "What Color Is Your Parachute?" If your funds are limited, this is worth a sacrifice to purchase (and/or worth pushing your local library to buy it).

Informative, witty and resourceful for the unemployed or if you are looking for something new and exciting

Great information and ideas for those of us who have gone through the down-sizing (get real - fired!) phase. Some of us would have spent hours trying to locate a website or even think of what to look for. My compliments to Ms. Martini and Ms. Reed for all the time spent researching and the fine tuning that made this book easy to read, yet provided great direction. Enjoyed the Baby Boomer chapter, great stories and brought back many memories. Still have more reading to do but had to comment on your style and approach. Lots of luck in your future writings!

    Funny & Informative -- What a combination!!

A friend of mine recently recommended "Thank You for Firing Me", and I am a retired person! I can see why, with the wonderful wit of the two writers, not to mention the banquet of suggestions and advice on how to survive after losing a job. The numerous ideas on how to get back into the working world again almost made me want to attempt a new business venture with the many creative ideas listed in the book. The Resource Guide is awesome -- so much research was done!! I had to laugh too many times as so many of the "incidents" hit home with me, and I can relate to the writers' humorous dialogue in a very unhumorous current work place. Many excellent suggestions have come out of this book and I know that it will help numerous people pick themselves up out of their doldrums and get back into a very productive, successful and exhilerating job discovery. I think this is a must book for everyone one! Thanks, guys.

    Thank You for Hiring Me!

I heard about this book while on holiday in New York and thought I would check it out. I am a law student and was recently let go from my paralegal job last October and have been depressed and despondent since then. I don't mind getting a job at a clothing store to make ends meet- which I did, but my passion is law.
After reading the book and finding the authors very smart and funny, I got to thinking about some of the things they said to do.
Last month I started a virtual paralegal service and I have four clients. Am I getting rich? No. Am I doing what I love and paying the bills? YES!
Buy this book for ideas, compassion, a laugh or three and a new outlook on life.
