Overview

Ten-year-old Nicki Fleming is about to start fifth grade. She has spent the summer on her Colorado ranch working with Sprocket, the service dog she has been training, and helping her mother, who is expecting twins. In addition, Nicki's best friend Becca was away all summer, and Nicki has gotten to be close friends with Kris, one of the new girls at their school.
The start of a new school year is usually an exciting time for Nicki, but this year it's laced with sadness because it means that Sprocket will soon leave for advanced training and eventual placement with a person with special needs. Starting school is also more challenging this year because it means trying to maintain close friendships with both Kris and Becca, who don't know each other very well.
Can Nicki find a way to let Sprocket go AND to keep both Kris and Becca close?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanna E. Henshon
Nikki has been very busy all summer long. She has helped train Sprocket, her service dog, and she has run errands around the family ranch. Nikki has also assisted her mother, who is expecting twins at the end of the summer. What could be more exciting than getting two new siblings at the same time? Becca, Nikki's good friend, has been out of town all summer and Nikki has become good friends with Kris in the meantime. What will happen when Becca comes back? Can the three girls be good friends—or will someone get left out of the circle? Nikki also worries about Sprocket. If he passes advanced training, she will lose her beloved dog. Now that Nikki and her brother, Andrew, love Sprocket, they are sad to think he might leave their home soon, even if that means the dog can make a difference in the life of a person with disabilities. As the birth of her twin siblings approaches, Nikki is torn in a dozen directions. In this heart-warming story, readers meet Nikki, an inspiring and intelligent character who will appeal to children ages 8-12. Reviewer: Suzanna E. Henshon, Ph.D.

This book was personally one of my favorites. It is amazing how well ten year old Nicki can train Sprocket to be a service dog, practicly alone!! When Sprocket passes advanced training, Nicki isn't sure wheather she should be happy or sad that he passed. But soon enough, Nicki's mom who was pregnent, had to go to the hospital to have the babies. Once the babies were born, Nicki's parents had not chosen names for the twin babies, and they let Nicki choose the names. Nicki named them aftet her friends, Becca and Kris. The names for the twins were, Rebecca and Kristine. After the babies turned one month old, Nicki got to visit Sprocketand his new owner who was in a wheelchair. Her name was, Laura.
