Children's Literature
The history and traditions of this holiday are clearly eXplained and depicted. The illustrations are an interesting combination of historic paintings and artifacts and contemporary photographs. During this holiday people celebrate or give thanks for the rich bounty in their lives. In earlier times people gave thanks for a good harvest and Thanksgiving draws on these traditions. Rau presents the story of the Pilgrims and their early Thanksgiving. Kids may be surprised to learn that the colonies did not celebrate the holiday regularly or at the same time. In 1863 President Lincoln established the last Thursday in November as a national Thanksgiving Day and finally in 1941, the date was set as the fourth Thursday in November. There are pictures of people eating dinner, a scene from the Macy's parade, a football game and people volunteering to prepare dinners for the less fortunate. The closing pages list additional books, organizations and Internet sites, a mini glossary, an indeX and a brief bio about the author. 2000, Grolier, $22.00 and $6.95. Ages 7 to 10.
