That '70s Show Presents That '70s Album: Rockin'

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Dawn Sutter Madell
So much occurred during the '70s -- politically, economically, and musically -- that it seems silly to try and encapsulate it all in a half-hour sitcom. So, "That '70s Show" spends most of its time exploring the hilarious monotony of teenage life in the Midwest, with a '70s backdrop. While the era merely provides a setting for the action, those involved with the show have paid great attention to providing believable details, including music, which finds its way onto two accompanying discs: ROCKIN' and its slinkier cousin JAMMIN'. The ROCKIN' album compiles the best guitar music of the era, but somehow skirts the cheesiness of a TV-only compilation. Cheap Trick ...

Cheap Trick does the show's theme song, a re-recorded version of Big Star's "In the Street" with a few extra, pointed lyrics from songwriter Ben Vaughn. You can really rock, relive your youth or discover someone else's youth with memorable moments such as Golden Earring's "Radar Love," Ted Nugent's "Hey Baby," Alice Cooper's "Under My Wheels," the Kinks' "Celluloid Heroes," or Big Star's classic "September Gurls."
All Music Guide - Gina Boldman
That '70s Show Presents That '70s Album: Rockin' is based on the Fox sitcom That '70s Show -- a somewhat bawdy but harmless comedy about teens in the Me Decade -- and the CD mimics the show's sentiment and attitude quite accurately, but with less schmaltz than the Jammin' album. The songs are mostly hard rock hits and include Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Saturday Night Special," Montrose's "Rock Candy," the Kinks' "Celluloid Heroes," Ram Jam's "Black Betty," Argent's "Hold Your Head Up," and James Gang's "Funk #49." For some reason, Big Star's "September Gurls" made the CD, but "In the Streets," the Big Star song upon which the TV's theme show is based, was remade unnecessarily by Cheap Trick. Even worse, Cheap Trick also revamped "I Want You to Want Me" into a vapid energy-sucker. Despite some great rock songs, Rockin' is really just for rabid fans of the TV show.
